IBM promises ace analytics for Wimbledon fans - computing.co.uk

IBM promises ace analytics for Wimbledon fans - computing.co.uk

At a time when businesses are increasingly trying to understand how to exploit big data, and the structured information repositories they maintain, IBM has revealed the analytics technologies it will employ at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship later this month.

The All England Club, which runs the tournament, has built a new website with IBM, which uses IBM's SmartCloud infrastructure to scale to meet the spikes in demand from fans.

Further reading

This cloud is comprised of a fleet of dispersed IBM servers and storage in three locations, which are virtualised as one.

The new site features an interactive scoreboard, which IBM calls SlamTracker, which uses the sort of predictive analytics more commonly seen in enterprise systems.

This uses both historical and real-time data in an attempt to add depth and insight for viewers, including an assessment of the top three things a player must do in order to perform well in a specific match.

This is similar technology to that employed by many businesses when analysing large volumes of data in order to determine their optimal strategy.

The 2012 Wimbledon Championships, which begin on 25 June, will also include a feature IBM calls SecondSight, which will track player movement, and performance changes over each set.

The system is designed to provide data that could help players, coaches, commentators and fans is assessing and monitoring competitors' technique and performance.

"This year a completely new website takes the understanding and insight into the Wimbledon Championships to a whole new level," said Alan Flack, IBM's programme executive for Wimbledon.

"Using the power of cloud computing each individual data point is integrated instantaneously to deliver a powerful experience for fans, players, coaches and officials alike."

David Nalbandian: Fined over incident at Queen's - Sporting Life

David Nalbandian has been fined the maximum penalty of 10,000 euros (£8,000) for kicking an advertising hoarding into a line judge's leg at Queen's on Sunday, the ATP have confirmed.

Nalbandian was disqualified from the final of the AEGON Championships at Queen's Club when he lashed out at the hoarding which subsequently struck Andrew McDougall.

The Argentinian's £36,500 prize money was taken off him and the ATP revealed on Monday that after the match they issued him with the maximum fine of 10,000 euros for unsportsmanlike conduct.

An ATP spokeswoman said: "Nalbandian automatically forfeited his prize money and ranking points due to his conduct default.

"A maximum 10,000 euro (£8,000) fine also was issued onsite by the ATP supervisor for unsportsmanlike conduct."

The confirmation of the fine is another blow in what has been a difficult 24 hours for the 2002 Wimbledon finalist.

Police confirmed on Monday that they are investigating a complaint of alleged assault against Nalbandian after the injury to McDougall.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We are aware of an incident at the AEGON Championships on June 17.

"A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating.

"The allegation is of assault."

The ATP insist Nalbandian will not be suspended for the incident and the player himself is determined to play on as normal, with his main priority being a long run at Wimbledon.

The player's reprsentative Bernado Ballero said: "I can confirm to you that David's thoughts are about playing at Wimbledon."

Nalbandian apologised to McDougall immediately after kicking the hoarding and the crowd sided with the player, chanting "play on" after the match was handed to opponent Marin Cilic.

The former world number three hopes to return to Queen's next summer despite the incident.

"This incident doesn't mean that I'm not going to come back," Nalbandian said.

"It doesn't matter. I really feel good at this tournament.

"The tournament director is great to me and I like it.

"This is a bad situation for everybody and I really apologise for that but it doesn't mean anything to next year."

Nalbandian, who was fined £5,400 for throwing water at a staff member at the Australian Open in January, issued a statement apologising for his actions last night.

It read: "I am sorry and I regret the kick that unintentionally hurt the line judge.

"I never intended to hit him, it was an unfortunate reaction in which I wanted to relieve the loss of a point.

"I had the opportunity to apologise personally with the line judge for this regrettable event."

Wimbledon 2012: Sportsmail picks its 10 men to watch at SW19 - Daily Mail

    By Sportsmail Reporter

    |

With Wimbledon just days away, Sportsmail looks at 10 competitors in the men's pool that are sure to make it a tournament to remember.

Rafael Nadal managed to finally beat world No 1 Novak Djokovic at the French Open, as Andy Murray searches for his first Grand Slam title in front of his home crowd.

Man to beat: Novak Djokovic is defending his title at SW19

Man to beat: Novak Djokovic is defending his title at SW19

    Novak Djokovic

Djokovic gave hope to the rest that he is human by losing to Rafael Nadal at the French Open - the first time he has lost a grand slam final since dominating the men's game 18 months ago.

One defeat does not mean his crown has slipped, though, and the Serbian very much remains the man to beat.

    Rafael Nadal

The Spaniard finally seems to have broken the spell Djokovic has held over him for the last year and could not be in better form having again ruled the clay-court season, culminating in a record seventh French title by beating Djokovic. Wimbledon title number three looks a distinct possibility.

Up for it? Rafael Nadal hoped to dethrone Djokovic

Up for it? Rafael Nadal hoped to dethrone Djokovic

    Roger Federer

For some, Federer is becoming the forgotten man of men's tennis, which is ludicrous given his record and standing as arguably the greatest player of all-time.

Recent grand slams suggest he can no longer compete with Djokovic and Nadal - his last win was in January 2010 - but the lure of a seventh SW19 title will spur him on.

    Andy Murray

The perennial great British hope, Murray remains a strong contender but doubts over his ability to topple Djokovic or Nadal remain.

He was broken by the former at the Australian Open and was knocked out of the French at the quarters. In a summer of British sporting euphoria, all eyes will be on him.

Still trying: Andy Murray is hoping to win his first Grand Slam tournament

Still trying: Andy Murray is hoping to win his first Grand Slam tournament

    Juan Martin del Potro

The fiery Argentinian is still to show the form that saw him threaten to make the big four a five before injury struck.

He was unlucky to run into a belligerent Nadal at Wimbledon a year ago and, if he gets a good draw, he could go far.

    David Ferrer

Arguably the most consistent player on the tour behind the usual suspects, the Spaniard accounted for Murray in France and is a solid player in every department, even if grass is not his preferred surface.

Permanence of class: Roger Federer is vying to win his seventh Wimbledon crown

Permanence of class: Roger Federer is vying to win his seventh Wimbledon crown

    Bernard Tomic

Australia's heir to Lleyton Hewitt, teenager Tomic caused quite a stir a year ago, accounting for some big names including Robin Soderling on his way to a quarter-final spot. He is unlikely to win it, but SW19 is clearly a special place for him so progress could be possible.

    Mardy Fish

Fish's realisation of his clear talent has been one of the highlights of the last year, although his shock withdrawal from the French with a heart condition raises questions over the level of fitness he will bring to London.

Exciting: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has provided some scintillating tennis this season

Exciting: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has provided some scintillating tennis this season

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Few will forget charismatic Frenchman Tsonga's stunning come-from-behind quarter-final win over Federer last year, but to land that elusive maiden major, he needs to do it consistently.

So far, he has not shown that he can, but he is always good value for the crowd and the tournament.

    John Isner

The giant American has shown there is more to his game than big serving and durability, and the grass will suit him.

A good draw could see him finally go deep into a tournament.

'I was furious - there was just no notice of it' (From Borehamwood Times) - Borehamwood & Elstree Times

Anger over Arriva changes to 550 bus service

Bus users have hit out at Arriva for making changes to a route through Watford.

Alterations to the route of the 550 Arriva service came into place on Sunday, leaving many passengers angry and confused.

The bus journey, which used to connect Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley, Watford, Elstree and Borehamwood, has been shortened and parts of the service have been made less frequent.

11-year-old James Gordon was unable to get to school on Monday as his morning bus had been rerouted cutting out Borehamwood.

His mother Helen Gordon has claimed that they were given no warning that he would not be able to use the service to travel into school.

She said: “There was just no notice of it – that is what I am really cross about.

“They said it was on their website but how often do you go and check the website?

“It should have been on the boards or something.

“We were in a complete panic – how were we going to get him to school?

“We rely on the bus to get him to school in the morning.”

The family have managed to find another service with a different bus company to get James to school, but Ms Gordon is still unhappy with the service they have received.

    She said: “I was furious.

“He could have been left for there ages.

“I am just so cross about the whole situation.”

Ms Gordon is not the only passenger to be left stranded by the cancelled service.

Sue Curran, 64, who lives in a retirement complex near Kings Langley station, uses the bus at least three times a week to travel to Hemel Hempstead and Watford.

However the new timetable means that the bus will only run once an hour.

The 64-year-old said: “I know it may seem trivial but a lot of older people do rely on that bus."

A spokesperson from Arriva said: “The 550 service was withdrawn between Watford and Borehamwood as it had low usage.

“We advised Hertfordshire County Council of our plans and they supported the service until June so that alternatives could be put in place.

“From 11th June, Sullivans Buses are operating a 306 service between Watford and Tesco at Borehamwood.

“Information was available locally and new timetables were distributed across the town, information was also available on our website and the Intalink website.

“More details can be found at www.intalink.org.uk.”

We never get the paper free anymore, as I imagine many don't and it's not really worth buying to be honest (compared to similar publications like Welwyn and Hatfield Times). Of course notices should have been put up on the stops affected! Sandra2

Championship fixtures 2012-13: Charlton start against Birmingham - Daily Mail

    By Sportsmail Reporter
    |

Relegated Bolton and their manager Owen Coyle face a hostile baptism on their return to the npower Championship after being handed an opening-day trip to Burnley.

Wanderers were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season, and the 19-mile August 18 trip to their local rivals would have been a testing enough start, without the bad blood that exists between Coyle and the Clarets.

The Scot quit Turf Moor in 2010 to move to the Reebok Stadium - they were relegated five months later - and can be sure of a rough ride against his former club, now managed by Eddie Howe.

Champions: Charlton celebrate winning the League One title last season

Champions: Charlton celebrate winning the League One title last season

A top-six finish will be the minimum expectation at Blackburn after their high-profile relegation.Steve Kean has kept his job as manager so far despite the numerous protests against him, and an opening day win at Ipswich could prove that better times are ahead this season.

The other club to head to the second tier from the Premier League were Wolves, and their new manager, Stale Solbakken, start at Leeds.

Runaway League One champions Charlton open at Birmingham - seeking a new manager after Chris Hughton went to Norwich - while runners-up Sheffield Wednesday mark their Championship return with a match at Derby.

Simon Grayson`s Huddersfield, play-off final winners, go to Cardiff who will give their controversial new all-red kid its first airing, while big-spending Leicester host Peterborough.

Elsewhere on the opening day, play-off losers Blackpool go to Millwall, Steve Bruce will start life as Hull manager at home to Brighton, Barnsley take on Middlesbrough, Bristol City are at Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace face Watford.

There are no shortage of derby clashes, with 10 northern sides and another five from the Midlands.
Huddersfield fans will look straight for their December 1 clash with Leeds with that in mind, while Blackburn and Bolton first meet on November 28.

The normally-taxing Christmas period involves three games (Boxing Day, December 29 and January 1), with Bolton`s hosting of Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn`s trip to Middlesbrough the most attractive-looking December 26 dates.

Owing to the later-than-usual kick-off date, the season does not end until May 4.

Birmingham host Blackburn on the final day, Blackpool go to Bolton, Wolves head to Brighton, Hull are at home to Cardiff, while east Midlands rivals Forest and Leicester meet.
