WIMBLEDON 2012 PREVIEW - express.co.uk

The men who may have something to say about that are, of course, six-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer, currently a 5-1 chance with major bookies and Scotlands own Andy Murray, a best-priced 9-1 shot.
Murray made it to the semi-finals twelve months ago. His French Open campaign had looked in doubt when he suffered a back spasm during his second-round match against Jarkko Nieminen but he recovered and went on to make the quarter-finals only to lose to world number six, David Ferrer.

Next on the bookies list is powerful Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who could surprise a few at 25-1 and looks the value bet for punters wanting to bet at Bet Victor.

The 27 year-old stunned the Centre Court crowd in last years tournament when he came from two sets down to beat Federer 36, 67, 64, 64, 64 and reach the semi-finals for the first time in the process. In the semis, despite serving for the first set, he lost to Djokovic 3-1; a match that made the Serb world number one for the first time.

On the distaff side of the game, French Open champion and 2004 Wimbledon winner Maria Sharapova is 10-3 favourite, followed by four-time Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams at 11/4 and Czech Petra Kvitova at 7/2.

Sharapova's comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 beating of Kvitova to reach her first Roland Garros final, and win it, to reclaim the world number one ranking, may have little relevance on grass. Kvitova beat Sharapova in straight sets in last years Wimbledon final, so perhaps has the confidence to win again on grass.

It promises to be one of the most interesting Wimbledon tournaments of all time.

Robert Green to join QPR from West Ham on free transfer - BBC News

Robert Green will join Queens Park Rangers when his West Ham contract expires at the end of this month.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who is currently with the England squad at Euro 2012, will sign a two-year deal.

QPR boss Mark Hughes said: "He's got all the characteristics of a top keeper and he'll be a huge addition for us."

Perfect symmetry

Robert Green made the same number of appearances in his six years with West Ham United (241) as he did during a decade at Norwich City (1996-2006)

"It's an exciting period for everybody connected to QPR and I can't wait to get started," added Green, who spent six years at Upton Park.

"I'm excited about the challenge ahead and hugely encouraged by the direction in which the owners and Mark Hughes are looking to take the club."

The 6ft 3in keeper, who has won 12 senior caps, started his career at Norwich before joining West Ham in 2006 for £2m where he went on to make more than 200 appearances.

His last game for the East London side shirt was at Wembley in May, when West Ham beat Blackpool 2-1 in the Championship play-off final.

The Hammers were keen to retain Green, with joint-chairman David Gold writing on Twitter  last month: "Robert Green is a free agent, he has chosen to move on.

"Nobody wants Rob to leave but nothing is forever, he must do what's best for him and we must do what's best for us."

After making his international debut against Colombia in 2005, Green was out of the England side until 2009 when he played a role in the successful qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Seeing red

Green became the first goalkeeper to be sent off for England when he was dismissed for a professional foul during England's final 2010 World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in October 2009

He retained his place in Fabio Capello's squad for the tournament and was picked to face the United States in England's opening group game.

But that match will forever be remembered for Green allowing Clint Dempsey's 25-yard shot to squirm under his body and roll over the line in a 1-1 draw.

Green has since recovered, and remains in the England squad as back-up to Manchester City's Joe Hart. He made his last international appearance against Norway in one of England's Euro 2012 warm-up games.

Wimbledon 2012: Should Nalbandian Be Allowed to Play? Current Poll 78/22 Yes - Bleacherreport.com

David Nalbandian's disqualification for injuring a linesman at the pre-Wimbledon event at Queen's Club certainly grabbed the biggest headlines over the weekend.

The Argentinian is to be the subject of a New Scotland Yard assault enquiry, has been fined $12,560 for "unsportsmanlike behaviour," docked his $57,350 prize money and forfeited any of the ATP ranking points he would have earned from the event, via ESPN.

But is this enough punishment for his vicious, though unintentional assault, and should Nalbandian be allowed to play at Wimbledon?

Imagine Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo running into the advertising board at Euro 2012, kicking down the sign and somehow causing a nearby official or spectator to receive an inch-long gash in their leg.

Would their "crime" result in actions similar to those described against Nalbandian?

Of course.

Nalbandian has said he's sorry to the victim of his crime, linesman Andrew McDougall, but is it enough?

Yes, I know he didn't mean it—but what did he mean? Surely players can't go round lashing out just because they lose their serve.

Is it the "pressure of the tour" as Nalbandian alluded to during his post-match press conference?

What pressure? Nalbandian has earned over $11 million from the ATP tour. I wonder what sort of "pressure" he feels subjected to.

Nalbandian, of course, isn't the first player to be defaulted from an ATP event. Gentleman Tim Henman was disqualified from the doubles at Wimbledon 1995 after accidentally hitting a ball at a ball girl.

Jeff Tarango saved the umpire the trouble of disqualifying him the same year at Wimbledon; picking up his bags and walking off court in objection to partisan crowd support. Tarango's wife even slapped the umpire's face as he left the court.

Personally, I'm surprised the All-England Club haven't already told him he's unwelcome at SW19.

What do you think?

Wembley FC enlist former stars - SkySports

Venables, who is technical advisor at the semi-professional club, has enlisted the services of Ray Parlour, Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Claudio Cannigia and Brian McBride.

The five former internationals have all signed to play for the club, while former England No.1 David Seaman is also on board as the new goalkeeping coach.

The signings have been made to help take Wembley FC as far as they can go in next season's FA Cup, with the support of sponsors Budweiser.

Parlour, former England and Arsenal player, said: "I've always believed grassroots football is essential to the lifeblood of the game so when I got the call asking if I would like to come out of retirement and help raise its profile I jumped at the chance.

"I'm looking forward to working with Terry Venables again and helping a group of talented footballers achieve their dreams of playing in The FA Cup and seeing how far they can go in the tournament."

Opportunity

Ian Bates, Wembley FC manager, added: "The opportunity to learn from ex-professionals like Parlour and Seaman who have been there and done it will give us the best chance possible to go further than we ever have done in next season's FA Cup.

"The initiative shines a light on non-league football reminding people of the importance of amateur football in contributing to the development of the national game."

Former Three Lions stars Seaman, Parlour, Keown and Le Saux have between them won the FA Cup 12 times.

The new additions will add to the club's experience on the pitch starting with the FA Cup extra preliminary round tie on August 11th.

Brady - Hammers have hit list - SkySports

The Hammers secured promotion through the play-offs after beating Blackpool 2-1 at Wembley in May and have already completed the signing of Mohamed Diame from Wigan and former Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The vice-chairman is excited to have overseen the club's return to the top flight and says their aims go beyond simply staying there.

She told Sky Sports News: "We hope to bring in a few more significant signings to improve our team and increase our chances of remaining in the Premier League and really 'have a go'.

Compete

"We want to compete and really make a contribution to this league. West Ham are a great club who deserve to play in the greatest league in the world.

"Sam has made a very strategic plan. We have a comprehensive list of players we hope to bring in and we are working to do that."

But Brady refused to comment on reports that Grant Holt is at the top of that list.

She continued: "It's not appropriate to comment on other people's players.

"We prefer to do our business face to face with the chairmen of other clubs, and that's what we'll do."

Dream

West Ham are also hopeful of taking over the Olympic Stadium, and Brady says the club are committed to preserving the venue's legacy.

The former Birmingham City chairman added: "We still have a dream. The Olympic Stadium has been built. Someone has to use it, and provide the jobs.

"Its legacy needs to be preserved. It needs someone to come into that community, ensure supporters come in and use the park, and do that on a global stage -that's what the Premier League provides.

"We're very hopeful and we're working very hard to get it."
