Asda plans for Redhill site regeneration progress - Get Surrey

Asda plans for Redhill site regeneration progress - Get Surrey

RESIDENTS in Redhill will soon be able to have their say on Asda's plans to regenerate the Cromwell Road area of the town centre.

The supermarket firm has submitted its transport assessment for a new 30,000sq-ft store to Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, allowing the authority to formally register the planning application.

Asda wants to open in Redhill in 2014, bringing almost 300 new jobs.

Oliver Jones, property communications manager, said: "We are keen to bring this food store as quickly as possible for the people who want it there.

"It will bring 280 jobs to the area, a mix of full-time and part-time, which will all have access to training programmes.

"We are still waiting on planning permission, but we are ever hopeful and we realise this will be a big benefit for the community."

The land Asda wants to build on is currently occupied by a number of people living in flats owned by the Raven Housing Trust.

Susan Lea, communications officer for the trust, said: "While discussions have been taking place with Asda, no agreement has been reached on the terms for any purchase of Raven’s land.

"We remain open to discussions with Asda but do not anticipate much happening now until after the summer, and only then if Asda is successful with their planning application.

"If we do reach an agreement with Asda following a successful planning application, we will of course work with the council to find alternative homes and provide financial and practical help to residents affected."

And speaking for Asda, Mr Jones added: "Typically, [with] situations like this, they [the residents] are provided with a compensation offer or rehoused elsewhere. We will keep people informed as best as we can."

Local resident Hannah Rainford said that although she thought the site would be better used for something other than a supermarket, she would still prefer Asda to set up shop there rather than it remain in its present state.

She said: "I would rather that Redhill had one large supermarket and that the run-down Cromwell Road area was regenerated with restaurants and a cinema. Although I would rather that Asda took the site, over the option of it staying as it is."

Another Redhill resident, Gary Hawkins, believes the town has enough supermarkets already, saying: "I think the monster-sized Sainsbury's will be quite enough, but Cromwell Road does need some attention."

Sussex business chief's shock exit stuns bosses (From The Argus) - The Argus.co.uk

Sussex business chief's shock exit stuns bosses

Business leaders have reacted with shock after Sussex’s chamber of commerce announced the departure of its chief executive.

Sussex Enterprise last night announced that after an “extensive review of all operations”, boss Mark Froud would be “moving on to new challenges”.

Trevor Freeman, chairman of Brighton’s Federation of Small Businesses, said he was “very surprised” by the news.

He said: “I personally thought that Mark did a really good job. He was excellent at what he did.

“We had noticed that he had stopped coming down to the local economic partnership meetings so we were wondering what was going on.

“But you always knew where you were with Mark and it’s certainly a shame that he’s gone.”

Mr Froud led Sussex Enterprise for almost ten years after first joining in 1996 as director of economic research.

In 2001 he became director of policy responsible for planning and media relations before becoming chief executive in 2002.

When the coalition government scrapped regional development agencies, Sussex Enterprise lost a contract to deliver advisory services and a large chunk of its income.

Mr Froud caused controversy in February when he said residents and businesses in East Sussex had “lower aspirations” than those in West Sussex.

Peter Jones, chairman of East Sussex County Council, said he had disagreed with Mr Froud on many occasions but was sad to see him go. He said: “When he said what he said about East Sussex we had a face-to-face conversation and sorted it out. That’s the way it was with Mark. He has put a lot of effort into his work so I’m surprised that he has gone.

“But I would say that in Sussex we are seeing a resurgence of local chambers of commerce so I think Sussex Enterprise now has to find a real role for itself.”

A Sussex Enterprise spokeswoman said: “Sussex Enterprise has over the last few months undertaken an extensive review of all operations and concluded that major changes are needed to re-emphasise and expand our core membership services.

“In today’s difficult trading conditions companies of all sizes need the opportunities to come together regularly and share information, learn from each other and find new ways to improve their businesses.

“Mark Froud who led the organisation for many years will be moving on to new challenges and we all wish him well.”

Mark Froud and Sussex Enterprise have served business in Sussex well. With the changing climate the organisation may have its challenges but it is a shame to see Mark go. It is also a shame that the chairman of SE could not take responsibility for this change, rather than leaving it to an anonymous corporate spokesperson - not a sign a good leadership! michael.evans

Actually in recent years SE has been quite a 'vanilla' organisation. Prided itself on being one of the largest Business Chambers but seemed to lack sharp, professional expertise. Found that even one of the business advisers was unaware how direct debits worked! Tailgaters Anonymous

Boy, 3, helps deliver baby in Asda car park in Spondon - BBC News

Joshan kept his mother calm while Ashriya was born

A three-year-old boy has been hailed a hero by his mother after he helped her give birth in a supermarket car park in Derby.

Sonia Chima was on her way to hospital with husband Kaz and son Joshan when she went into labour.

The family pulled into the Asda store in Spondon and dialled 999.

Mrs Chima said Joshan helped her to keep calm and had told her how to breathe until help arrived. "He was brilliant," she said.

"He's a live wire most of the time - but when we needed him he really shone through."

'Stop the car'

Her husband, who had gone into the supermarket to get blankets for the baby after the paramedics arrived, said: "Just when you think you've seen everything in life, something like that pops up.

"I suppose the real hero is Joshan, if he hadn't been calm I think I would probably have lost it.

"He was holding his mum's hand - giving her juice and saying to her, 'mum you breath like this'. He was brilliant."

Mrs Chima went into advanced labour with her daughter Ashriya shortly after leaving home for the hospital.

She said: "The plan was my for my mother to have Joshan, but it all happened so fast - I had asked my mum to meet us at the hospital.

"But we literally got to the Asda roundabout, about three or four minutes from home.

"I said to Kaz, I can't help but push - I think we need to stop the car."

Sussex draft budget has no tax increase - Delaware Wave

REHOBOTH BEACH -- The 197,145 residents of Sussex County should not expect a tax increase, as the first draft of the county's fiscal year 2013 budget was introduced to council Tuesday, May 22.

This was just one of many tidbits that Sussex County administrator Todd Lawson shared with members of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, as he spoke about the financial shape of the county.

And despite the revenue from the Realty Transfer Tax going down about 6.65 percent from fiscal year 2012 and about two-thirds of the 2005 figure, Lawson said the county is in good shape.

"We will have a balanced budget and there will be no tax increases this year," he said. "I made sure I didn't do that on my first watch. We haven't raised taxes in Sussex for over 20 years, so I didn't want to do it in my first five months."

The FY2013 budget, which is at approximately $139 million, will be introduced this week to the Sussex County Council. Lawson said it's broken down to $51 million for operating costs, $34 million for water and sewer costs and $55 for long term capital improvements.

"It's a pretty robust operation," he said, adding that there are 500 employees spread across the county.

Lawson said it is important to pay attention to what he called the three p's: be prepared, be ready to promote what is in the county and protect what the county already has, namely the agriculture and tourism industries.

"It seems pretty simple, but when you put it into an active mode, it's very important," he said. "We have a robust local economy and hopefully we'll see that bounce back even further, but we need to be prepared when other businesses are looking to move in or when businesses that are currently here are looking to expand."

One project taking place is extending the runway at the Georgetown Airport by 1,000 feet, a project that Lawson said is the single biggest infrastructure project in the history of the county.

Not only will the extension allow for bigger planes, which could attract additional businesses -- the county is in talks with FedEx and Lawson said the company is interested in establishing a Georgetown hub if the infrastructure is there -- but it will also re-route Truck Route 9 to create a true bypass around Georgetown, an area that Lawson said can be "a pretty bad bottleneck." for those traveling to and from the beach via Route 404.

Lawson said the project will stimulate $48 million of total output over the range of the project and create 304 jobs. The tentative schedule has the first 500 feet of the extension done this summer.

Chamber President and CEO Carol Everhart said he thought Lawson was clear and concise, informing members about the status of the county and what needs to be done in the future.

"Everything depends on our economic development," she said. "Whether it's tourism, agro-tourism or some other kind of business, that has to be foremost in the mind of anyone who is running a county budget."

Sussex Police announce review on controversial forced retirement rules (From The Argus) - The Argus.co.uk

Sussex Police announce review on controversial forced retirement rules

Long-serving police officers facing forced retirement could be spared under new proposals. Sussex Police will recommend to the Sussex Police Authority that rules which force officers to take compulsory retirement after 30 years service be withdrawn from September.

Thirty new officers will also be recruited at the beginning of next year it was announced today. The controversial rule – Police Regulation A19 – was introduced last year as the force looked to make £52 million of cuts by 2015.

Commander of Brighton and Hove Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett was among the 53 officers who would have been forced to retire if the rules had remained in place for the coming year.

Critics, including crime writer Peter James, said the rule meant the loss of the most experienced officers in the force and was a waste of the investment in years of training. Marion Fanthorpe, director of human resources, said because of savings made elsewhere Sussex Police has reduced the number of officer posts it needs to axe from 500 to 400.

Staff posts have also been reduced from 550 to 450.

She said: “It is with regret that we have had to lose a number of excellent officers, however it has been crucial for us to be able to make the necessary level of savings needed by 2015, given the rates of natural turnover of police officers.

"Along with faster than expected progress on making savings, we have also found higher levels of savings from areas other than direct post reductions than we originally anticipated.

"In light of this progress Sussex Police is proposing to the SPA that the force is in a financial position to end the use of regulation A19 from end of September 2012.

"We still have a long way to go to find all the savings we need, however it is good that we are now in a position to take these two positive steps."

The new officers will be selected from 98 candidates Sussex Police has kept in a recruitment pool.

They are expected to start by May next year.
