Haas dig at ‘faker’ Murray - The Sun

Haas dig at ‘faker’ Murray - The Sun

The German, playing at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, ripped into the Brit No 1 following Murray’s back problems at the French Open.

It led to Wimbledon legend Virginia Wade labelling Muzza a “drama queen”.

The world No 4 was seething with Wade and now Haas, the former world No 2, has let rip too.

Haas’ opponent yesterday, Aussie Bernard Tomic, quit with a back problem and Haas said: “It’s tough when you play against someone who is on the court like he is not well or is injured.

“I find no one does this better than Andy, from time to time. Sometimes he looks like he can barely move, then the trainer comes and suddenly he moves like a cat.

“Everyone knows this now. People talk about it in the locker room."

Murray will be furious at Haas and is sure to hit back after kicking off the biggest summer of his career at Queen’s today.

He roars into action at the AEGON Championships against Nicholas Mahut, after the Frenchman eased past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4 6-2.

It will be Murray’s first match since losing to David Ferrer in the French Open quarter-finals last week.

The Scot, 25, said: “With Wimbledon followed by the Olympics and then the US Open, it’s not only the biggest summer of my career but also of the other leading players’ careers too.”

Meanwhile, Johanna Konta has been given a Wimbledon wildcard.

The 21-year-old played as an Australian before switching nationality in May and becoming the British No 6.

Wales floods: Mines pollution fear investigated - BBC News

Scientists are to investigate whether severe flooding near Aberystwyth has contaminated land with harmful metals from abandoned mines.

River banks that have stored toxic metals such as lead, zinc and cadmium for generations, could have been eroded and the toxins washed down stream.

A team from Aberystwyth University will survey the catchments areas of the rivers Leri, Rheidol and Ystwyth.

There are fears the pollution could pose a risk to land, animals and crops.

Parts of Ceredigion were flooded by 5ft (1.5m) of water with record high river levels in parts on Saturday.

A major clean-up operation continues in Aberystwyth and the nearby villages of Talybont, Dol-y-Bont and Llandre and other areas affected by the flooding.

The Met Office has confirmed that more than a month's worth of rain fell in the Aberystwyth area on Friday.

There are concerns that farmland has been contaminated and this could pose a risk to animals and crops”

End Quote Prof Mark Macklin Aberystwyth University

Mark Macklin, a professor of physical geography at Aberystwyth University, said the force of the flood waters could have eroded river banks which stored harmful metals.

These metals could have flowed down stream and been deposited on the flood plains.

"Much of Ceredigion was affected by metal mining, but most of it finished before the start of World War I," he said.

"As a result of the mining, rivers and river banks in the area have been contaminated from the mines themselves right the way down to the sea.

"There are concerns that farmland has been contaminated and this could pose a risk to animals and crops," he added.

"We're starting a survey of the flood plains on Tuesday. We'll take fresh flood deposits, such as silt, and they will be chemically analysed. We will hopefully have some answers in a month or so."

Meanwhile, planning consent given to homes built on a floodplain in Aberystwyth might have been considered differently if an application was submitted today, a planning chief has said.

End Quote Russell Hughes-Pickering Ceredigion council's assistant director of planning

Properties in Parc y Llyn were given the go-ahead in July 1994.

The area was flooded at the weekend forcing businesses and retailers to temporarily close. However, the homes on the site were not flooded.

Planning guidelines, TAN 15, were changed in 2004.

"The planning system is more cautious than when the permissions were granted in 1994 for the development of the Parc y Llyn area," said Russell Hughes-Pickering, Ceredigion council's assistant director of planning.

"I suspect there would be a different approach to the housing application - the retail perhaps not, they are less vulnerable."

He added that the planning system was "more cautious than back in 1994".

Mr Hughes-Pickering said "the defences worked in this case" but the retail outlets, like Morrisons and a newly opened B&Q, were flooded.

Significant damage

The houses are built on raised ground.

Environment Agency Wales said flood risk was an important factor which was considered in all relevant planning applications.

A spokesperson said: "Our role has been to advise local authorities on planning applications in line with Welsh government's planning policy Wales, and taking advice from its technical advice note TAN 15."

One of the services affected by the flooding in Aberystwyth was Ystwyth Medical Group.

Its medical centre in Llanbadarn Fawr, which has 9,000 patients, has been relocated temporarily after suffering significant damage.

Scotland - Scotsheep 2012 - Meattradenewsdaily (blog)
‘You are a remarkable breed and I can only salute you on this great occasion,’ he said.

The Duke presented the NSA Scotland Silver Salver to RHET stalwart, Jimmy Warnock, Sandilands, Lanark for his services to the Scottish sheep industry.

Rendered speechless, possibly for the first time ever, Jimmy is a popular and deserving recipient of the award.

The Duke then toured the event, escorted by NSA Scotland chairman Jimmy Sinclair, visiting NSA Scotland, QMS Scottish Sheep Strategy, the Wool centre and the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, and calling in at the North Country Cheviots, Scotch Mules and Blackfaces en route.

Elsewhere, Cab Sec Richard Lochhead was kept busy, firstly on the panel at the seminar on CAP reform, then on to The Morrison’s stand and ‘Ready, Steady, Cook!’ where he pitted his culinary skills against those of BBC ‘Countryfile’ presenter Adam Henson.

The result was a diplomatic draw!

MEP Alyn Smith took part in a seminar on reducing bureaucracy which is a hot topic among sheep farmers.

Fellow panel member Brian Pack has been tasked with finding ways of cutting red tape and we await the outcome with great interest.

Down in the field, the bewildering array of sheep equipment on offer kept the trade stand busy for most of the day.

NSA Scotland is indebted to our hosts, Morrisons, for allowing us the use of an excellent venue; to the sponsors of Scotsheep for their generous support; to the Scotsheep committee and chairman Neale McQuistin, for the time, energy, ideas and labour which made a superb event run like clockwork; to Morrisons farm staff who could not do enough for us; and to everyone who turned out in the rain to support the event and make it a record attendance.

Hiestand: ESPN serves up Wimbledon coverage plans - USA Today

ESPN becomes the sole U.S. TV outlet for the tennis grand slam on grass this month when it kicks off June 25. But while NBC used the line largely as a marketing hook, ESPN also will use it as the title of a new hour-long pregame show that will air, at either 7 or 8 a.m. ET depending on action, during the tournament's middle Saturday and last four days.

"Throughout the (TV) negotiations with the All-England Club, they asked us to look at bringing back the moniker," says ESPN programmer Jason Bernstein.

Also on Wednesday, ESPN will name Mike Tirico as a host. The network already announced earlier that John McEnroe had joined the fold as lead analyst. But the biggest change in coverage will be in scheduling. On second-week coverage in past years, NBC and ESPN juggled time slots, with NBC sometimes picking matches and airing them on tape-delay rather than pre-empting its Today show.

This year, says ESPN vice president Jamie Reynolds, everything will be live and "multi-plexed rather than patchwork" as ESPN focuses on Centre Court action and ESPN2 on everything else. ESPN will stream 820 hours — up from 650 last year — on its ESPN3 broadband service and will add a 3 p.m. ET highlights show on the final Sunday, which could air opposite ESPN's live men's final if that match runs long. ESPN, says Reynolds, also will add an overhead "spider cam" rolling on cables for crowd shots. Says Bernstein when asked whether that camera might ever roll above Centre Court: "That's something we're all looking at, and whether it would affect the mystique."

Ochocinco-Knocks redux:HBO got lucky when exuberant attention-seeker Chad Ochocinco joined the Miami Dolphins, the subject of this summer's five-episode HardKnocks, which debuts Aug. 7. Ochocinco showed up a lot onscreen when Knocks followed the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009. He sees himself as anything but camera-shy, noting in 2010 before his short-lived show with Terrell Owens on Versus: "Do you know how dangerous it is for us to have a stage like this?" Other Dolphins in training camp might take their hardest hits if they try to get between Ochocinco and a Knocks camera.

But despite speculation that the NFL Films-produced Knocks already was working with Ochocinco on Monday, HBO spokesman Ray Stallone says that isn't true: "A member of the production team said hello to Chad in the Dolphins cafeteria. … There was no scheduled meeting or shoot."

Duval in new role: ESPN on Tuesday announced David Duval will join its U.S. Open coverage as an ESPN3 analyst in what amounts to a TV tryout. While Duval says he'd "definitely" like to do TV eventually, he adds: "I don't want it to be seen as a transition because I don't believe my playing career is over."

Running numbers: In national ratings, Fox averaged 4.8% of U.S. households for its 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup races, down 4%. … After TV ratings drops for the previous Stanley Cup Final games, NBC's Game 6 on Monday between the Kings and New Jersey Devils eked out a ratings uptick — thanks largely to Los Angeles. In the USA's No. 2 market, Game 6 drew 13.6% of local households — the most ever for NHL action there. Nationally, the game got a 4.0 overnight — 4% of households in the 56 urban markets measured for overnights — up 3% from last year's Boston Bruins-Vancouver Canucks Game 6. (In New York, the game drew 5% of local households.) NBC's previous three Cup Final games averaged 1.8% of U.S. households — down 28% — and NBC Sports Network cable games averaged 1.1% — down 30%.

Spice rack: NBC golf analystJohnny Miller on whether the stars of the made-for-TV U.S. Open Thursday and Friday group pairing of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson might be affected by the spotlight: "Let's put it this way, I would much rather play with two guys that are shooting 67 than two guys that are shooting 79 and going to every toilet, you know." … You be the judge: HBO will follow its Saturday replay (10 p.m. ET) of Timothy Bradley's controversial win over Manny Pacquiao with an online viewer poll on whether the judges got it right.
