Essex's Ferriero signs deal with Pens - Salem News

Benn Ferriero has landed with a new NHL team.

An Essex native who has spent the last three seasons switching between the San Jose Sharks and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Worcester Sharks, signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly worth $700,000.

A two-way deal means that Ferriero can play with either the Penguins or their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Over his three-year NHL career in San Jose, the 25-year-old Ferriero scored 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists) in 92 games. In 121 career AHL games, the former Governor’s Academy and Boston College standout has scored 101 points (44 goals, 57 assists).

Ferriero’s career highlight to date came on his 24th birthday in the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs. In Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Detroit Red Wings, Ferriero scored his first career playoff goal, an overtime game-winner to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead in a series they would go on to win.

Ferriero also scored the game-winning goal against the Boston Bruins last October in his return to the TD Garden in Boston. The forward put the Sharks up 3-2 in the middle of the third period of a game they would prevail in, 4-2.

Ferriero was a 100-point scorer at Boston College and helped guide the Eagles to the 2008 NCAA championship. His younger brother Cody will be a junior at Northeastern University this fall; he was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft.
