Cannock Chase Council: Update on Asda dispute - Westmidlands.com

The chief executive of Cannock Chase Council is set to reveal the latest on private legal discussions being conducted between the authority and Asda next week.

Stephen Brown has agreed to provide the latest progress being made over the fight for £500,000 which continues to rumble on between the two organisations at a public meeting of the Cannock Chase Community Forum.

The cash was paid by Asda to Cannock Chase District Council as part of the conditions attached to building its 24-hour store in Avon Road, Cannock, in 2005.

The money was originally intended for an artifical pitch at the old Cannock Stadium.

But the stadium was demolished in 2009 and Asda is trying to claim the cash back as the authority had not spent the money within the agreed time limit.

Both sides have said they hope to see an end to the dispute soon, with council leader Councillor George Adamson saying he wants to see a conclusion to the saga by the end of year. Last week, the leader of the council, George Adamson, said the cash should be spent on improving leisure services.

Mr Brown wil provide his latest update on Tuesday.
