The budget supermarket's own-label Spanish Toro Loco Tempranillo 2011, which costs just £3.59, beat a host of renowned vintages, some of which cost eight times more.
And it impressed judges in the International Wine and Spirit Competition blind taste tests so much that it was awarded a coveted silver medal.
Now Aldi has had to increase its orders of the bottle after a month’s worth of stock sold in just three days.
The store has apologised to customers who were unable to get hold of it, admitting the surge had been a complete surprise.
Tony Baines, MD Buying at Aldi, said: “We’ve never seen anything like it.
“We sold a month’s worth of Toro Loco Tempranillo in just three days that's a sales uplift of roughly 1,000 per cent.
“We are now urgently buying in more stock and would like to reassure customers that stocks will be replenished this week.
“The Spanish wine name translates as 'Crazy Bull', which is rather appropriate given Brits seem to be going crazy for it.”
The surprise win caused a stir in the wine world and had enthusiasts flooding to stores across the country.
The wine is described as "fruity, rounded and appealing with nice bright cherry fruit" and is produced in the Utiel-Requena region in the province of Valencia, Spain.
The bottle was up against a 2005 red Costa di Bussia Riserva DOCG, which is priced at £31.15.
Also in the running was the £30 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.
The International Wine and Spirit Competition has two stages of judging a professional blind tasting followed by a detailed chemical and microbiological analysis.

A heart surgeon who lay down on the floor of a Tesco supermarket to checkout a woman shopper’s underwear, a court heard yesterday.
Dr Ahmed Abdelgawad, 35, was seen lying in the aisle of the busy store and looking up the woman’s skirt.
Police were called and Abdelgawad was arrested as he sidled up to other unsuspecting women in the shop.
Heart surgeon: Dr Ahmed Abdelgawad admitted lying in the aisle of a busy Swansea branch of Tesco and looking up a woman's skirt
Magistrates were shown CCTV footage of the heart surgeon peering up the woman’s skirt at the branch of Tesco in Swansea, South Wales.
Prosecutor Nicola Powell told the court: It’s a fleeting incident. Abdelgawad gets up afterwards and is in the store for some time afterwards and appears to be following several young females.
'At one point, he is crouching next to a young girl in the fruit and vegetable aisle and appears to be about to do the same again.'
Swansea magistrates heard Abdelgawad also had his hand in his trouser pocket and was touching himself during the incident on May 21.
Abdelgawad, who works at two hospitals in Swansea, admitted outraging public decency but denied touching himself.
In a statement read to the court on his behalf, he said: 'It was a stupid, silly mistake.
'I didn’t touch myself in any way. I am remorseful for the incident and put it down to my raised stress, anxiety or depression.'
CCTV footage at Swansea Tesco caught Abdelgawad peering up a woman's skirt
The court will hold a further hearing to decide whether Abdelgawad touched himself at the time of the offence.
Chairman of the bench Phil Llewelyn said: 'We are of the opinion that the difference between the prosecution case and the basis of plea would make a substantial difference in sentencing.'
Abdelgawad, of Roath, Cardiff, was released on conditional bail.
After the case it was revealed by the General Medical Council that Abdelgawad is currently working with no restrictions on his licence.
His employers, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, declined to comment on the case.
