THE pale blue coffin was so small the pallbearer carried it into church in his arms.

A steady stream of mourners, many fighting back tears, followed him, all wishing to pay their respects to the boy with no name who was found dumped by a stream.

The child – no more than a month old – had lain undiscovered, his body wrapped in a fleece, until a dog walker stumbled across him eight months ago in a remote part of Lancashire. Despite extensive inquiries, his parents have never been found.

Tragic: The boy no more than a month old was born full term but was abandoned on the banks of a stream last October

Tragic: The coffin was carried into the church by a funeral director whilst floral wreaths and teddy bears were laid at the church paying tribute to the 'llittle angel' and saying 'Be at peace sweet child'

So he will lie in a grave with a headstone carved with the words ‘Baby boy found in Kirkham’.

Despite never knowing the love of a family, however, his passing did not go unmourned.

The poignant burial was attended by scores of locals at St Michael’s Parish Church, Kirkham.

Moved by his story, they clubbed together to raise 1,000 to pay for the service.

Grief: All members of the community were invited to the funeral. The order of service entitled Funeral Service for a baby boy was headed by the words: 'celebrate life'

The coffin was carried into the church by funeral director Bill Crawford, whilst floral wreaths and teddy bears were laid outside paying tribute to the ‘Little angel’ or ‘Little Moses’.

One card read: ‘Be at peace sweet child.’ The order of service, entitled ‘Funeral service for a baby boy’  was headed with the words ‘Celebrate life.’

Mourners sang the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, and listened to readings of Psalm 139 by three local primary school headteachers and a passage from Mark Chapter 10 by Detective Inspector Martin Clague, one of the officers investigating the case.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Barrow, of Lancashire Constabulary, who is leading the inquiry, lit a candle during the 30-minute service and BBC’s Crimewatch, which featured an appeal to trace the baby’s family, sent flowers.

Touching: Tributes were left by shocked members of the community - Lancashire Police are still desperately searching for the family of the boy

The service concluded with a rendition of Brahms’s Lullaby, sung by the church choir.

‘Some cases get to you, and this is one,’ DCI Barrow said. ‘We will never give up hope of learning how the little boy came to be placed in this remote area.

‘It was so far off the beaten track, it could have only been known to someone familiar with the locality.

‘Whoever did this will remember it every day of their lives. It will be immensely traumatic. That’s why it’s important they get help too, tell us what happened.’

She added: ‘We don’t know whether he ever lived after birth. We don’t know the cause of death. We don’t want to speculate. Someone out there knows what happened. It is not too late to talk to us. We’ve still got a team working on this case.

Mystery: Even his ethnicity remains unknown, although DNA and forensic tests continue

‘We will not rest and leave no stone unturned until we get to the bottom of exactly what has happened.

‘The people of Kirkham have clearly been deeply moved and I would like to thank them for pulling together in the face of this tragedy to raise money and offer their services so that this little boy can be put to rest.’ A Blackpool council bin bag was found close to the baby’s body beside two towels, one green and one with a Union Jack motif.

Officers released an image of the fleece which swaddled him, with the emblem of the Asda supermarket on it, in the hope it would be recognised.

They also posted an advert on Facebook, which has attracted 1,900 views, and a YouTube video appeal, which has reached more than 2,500 people, but so far nobody has come forward.

A man of 35 was arrested on suspicion of murder, claiming he had been involved in the death of the infant, but released without charge after detectives concluded he had nothing to do with the tragedy.

Following the service, the Reverend Richard Bunday, vicar of Kirkham, said it provided the community with a chance to ‘pause, reflect and consider the precious gift of human life’.

‘This potential was not given to the baby boy and so we mourn his passing, but remind ourselves he  is held by God and enfolded in his love,’ he said.

So lovely what the villagers did, gives you hope in humanity. RIP tiny boy xx

What a very nice thing to do. RIP Baby Boy.

How utterly heart breaking, the poor little mite. What a lovely community is Kirkham to come out & bid a sad farewell to the baby boy. To his mother, sorry for your loss & so sad that you did not seek help from the compassionate people in the village. Well done the kind & humble people of Kirkham.

Thank you kind people for burying the poor baby. The sight of that little coffin makes my cry so much. Rest in peace, dear child.

Rip little man x much respect to the local community x I must also spear a thought for the mum. No one knows her circumstance, people in safe, healthy environments and health dont dump babies. I hope she gets rhe help she clearly needs x

Broke down it tears, may you be at peace now little sweetie. Thank you god for showing how a community has gathered together in this terrible time.

Rest in peace baby boy. Such a sad story.

RIP sweetie xxxx

So sad... What a lovely community

Wembley ironman to take on 'brutal' challenge in Germany for St Lukes Hospice - Harrow Times

Wembley ironman to take on 'brutal' challenge in Germany for St Lukes Hospice

A bus driver who was always picked last in school sports teams is taking on the Ironman challenge for charity in July.

Peter Corcoran, of Mostyn Avenue, Wembley, is representing Ireland in the brutal European championships for St Luke’s Hospice.

He will be joined by hundreds of others of competitors from all over the world during the televised swim, cycle and run challenge in Germany.

The 43-year-old said he spends on average eight hours a day practicing in the hopes that his courageous efforts will pay off.

He said: “It’s tough and a massive thing to be committing yourself to. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and am really panicked about what I’m letting myself in for. I am training ridiculous amounts when I’m not working.

“But I have wanted to do this for so long, and knowing that I am supporting such a worthy cause is really keeping me motivated. I hope people sponsor me because I want to raise as much money as possible.”

Mr Corcoran said that when he was 16, he saw a man wearing an Ironman shirt as he completed a marathon.

“From that point on, I knew I wanted to be an Ironman. I thought it was very fitting given that I was so bad at sports when I was in school. That’s been my goal ever since, to win a medal at the championships.”

The former Tokyngton councillor has just 15 hours to complete the course, even though he has seconds to get from the pool after his 4km swim to his bike for a 180km cycle.

He then has to complete a 42km run.

He has been supported by his girlfriend of eight years, Ieva, who he says always cheers him on during practices.

Mr Corcoran also hopes to make it to the world Ironman championships within a few years.

“That would really be a fantastic honour. I will be so proud of myself if I can make it because it’s been my dream for so long.”

Cheap smartphones and Zappar augmented reality T-shirts on sale at Asda - Pocket-lint.com

Buy the Motorola RAZR smartphone from high street retailer Asda and you could save yourself 100.

The retailer is selling the handset for 319, making it around 100 cheaper than the likes of Currys and Argos. It’s not the only credit-crunching deal that’s been brought to our attention either.

Asda is also selling the Samsung Galaxy Note in white for 369 – the cheapest we’ve been able to find it – while the Motorola Defy Mini can be purchased for 79.

And it’s not just phones that are making Asda a technical hub. The retailer has also begun selling Augmented Reality Zappar T-shirts.

Download the free Zappar app from Google Play or the Apple App Store, point your smartphone or tablet at one of the seven different design T-shirts and watch as the logo comes to life.

Okay, so AR T-shirts, and smartphones that came out last year might not stop you from shopping at more dedicated technology outfits, but there’s certainly more to Asda than cheap socks and pasta sauces.

Have you bought a phone from Asda? We want to know.

Harriers in fine form (From Watford Observer) - Watford Observer

Watford Harriers post impressive results in Walthamstow and Braintree

There was another impressive collection of performances from Watford Harriers as they took part in the Southern Athletics League in Walthamstow on Saturday.

In the 800m, Under-17 duo Harvey O’Brart and Corey Keane were in fine form as they took first and second place respectively to secure a Harriers one-two.

Ben Rochford also ran away with the 1500m to cross the line first while Matthew Hall produced a season’s best to finish second in the 400m hurdles.

The triple jump saw Jack Noone fall just 2cm short of his personal best as he claimed victory while Ray McKenna produced his best form of the season to finish as runner up in the discus.

Sisters Angela Halford and Alison Putko both enjoyed success in their respective races, with Halford taking the 1500m steeplechase crown while Putko was first home in the 100m hurdles.

Natalie Wickings continued her fine form to take second place in the 1500m while Chloe Dearman knocked over eight seconds off her previous best in the 3000m.

The Juniors ranks were in action on Sunday as they took in the Eastern Young Athletes meet in Braintree.

Under-15 competitor Fiona McQuire shone as she equalled her personal best to win the pole vault as well as throwing a season’s best and English Schools qualifying distance of 27.75m to win the discus.

If that wasn’t enough, she then went on to set a new personal best in the long jump to secure the runners up position.

On form Chloe Rixon took the top spot in the Under-17 long jump competition while Paige Smith jumped a new personal best to win the B long jump.

O’Brart and Keane made it a double success as they won their respective 800m races in improved times.

Rochford was again victorious in the 1500m as he ran a full seven seconds faster than his previous effort to narrowly miss out on a personal best while Tom Verbana likewise just missed out on a personal record as he won his 1500m race.

Matthew Hall was first home in the 80m hurdles while Matt Lally continued his winning run in the high jump by clearing 1.80m
