Medical experts believe his condition may have been exacerbated by his attendance at the Thames Diamond Jubilee river pageant last weekend, where he and the Queen stood aboard the Royal Barge to watch the flotilla in cold and wet conditions for more than four hours.

Buckingham Palace said that Prince Philip would “continue his convalescence” at home, but could not confirm whether he will join the Queen in the coming weeks for a series of further events to mark her Diamond Jubilee.

The couple have more than 20 joint engagements scheduled between this week and mid-July, including five regional tours and a tour of Northern Ireland later this month.

The Prince is next due to attend a garden party with the Queen at their Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Tuesday, followed by a two-day tour of the East Midlands on Wednesday and Thursday where they will be joined by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Nottingham.

The Queen and Prince Philip are scheduled to watch sporting activities in Vernon Park to mark the Fields in Trust initiative to protect the nation’s playing fields, a cause championed by the Prince.

The Duke of Cambridge is then expected to hand over the custody of more than 1,000 newly-protected playing fields to the Queen.

The Queen is patron of the Queen Elizabeth Fields Challenge, the Fields in Trust flagship programme supported by The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, which aims to protect 2012 outdoor recreational spaces in communities across the country as a legacy for the Diamond Jubilee.

Their next joint engagements include attending the Queen’s official birthday parade in London, Trooping the Colour, on Saturday, followed by two visits to South East England, a four-day tour of Scotland, a two-day trip to the West Midlands and a two-day visit to the North East.

Prince Philip is also due to host several solo engagements, including a dinner for the Grenadier Guards of which he is Colonel, on Friday.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: “Prince Philip has been released from hospital and continues to make good progress. He will continue his convalescence at home and will be spending the weekend privately.”

Princess Eugenie spoke of how her grandmother had found celebrating the final two days of her Diamond Jubilee without her husband at her side as “testing”.

The Princess described her grandparents as “a power couple who kind of astound people”. She said: “They are the most incredibly supportive couple to each other.

“Grandpa was unfortunately taken ill and for granny to come and do that alone was probably quite testing and I think he is her rock, really, and she is his. Together, they are invincible.”

The Prince received a number of visits in hospital from members of the Royal Family last week, including the Queen, Princes William and Harry, and the Duke of York, who said that his father was “mending very well”.

Last December, Prince Philip underwent a successful procedure to clear a blocked coronary artery and was in hospital for four nights over Christmas.

Earlier this year, Prince Harry said the operation had given him “a new spurt of life” and Prince Philip has since shown no signs of scaling back his official duties.

The Queen has described Prince Philip as “quite simply...my strength and stay all these years” and as she walked alone up the aisle at St Paul’s Cathedral on Tuesday, it was clear he is irreplaceable to her.

However, it is expected that upon Prince Philip's death, it will be the Earl of Wessex who inherits the title, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Edward has supported his father’s Duke of Edinburgh award scheme for several years, and regularly hosts receptions for participants at Buckingham Palace.

Prince Philip is believed to have a particularly close bond with his youngest son. Prince Edward’s children, Lady Louise and Viscount Severn, are the only of the Prince’s grandchildren to carry the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Prince adopted the surname Mountbatten when he became a naturalised British citizen shortly before his engagement to the Queen,

On Monday, the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, will fire a 41-gun salute at midday in London’s Hyde Park to mark his birthday.

The Honourable Artillery Company will follow suit at 1pm with a 62-gun salute from the Tower of London.
