Wymondham residents support a new supermarket in the town - EDP 24

A large majority of residents in a Norfolk town support building a new supermarket despite recent controversy over plans to use a greenfield recreation space for a new Asda store.
Out of 1,001 respondents to the survey question: Do you think Wymondham needs a new supermarket? 72pc answered yes despite the furore over Wymondham Town Council’s plans to sell the Kings Head Meadow site for the supermarket development.
However, there was only limited public support for using the Kings Head Meadow for a supermarket from those questioned in the survey, part of the Wymondham Area Action Plan to identify sites within the town for development.
Instead, the preferred locations were the old saleground site near the town’s station in Station Road, the disused Focus DIY store premises in Farriers Close or the Semmence Coaches site.
Two food stores have already submitted plans for supermarkets on three different sites within the town, including a 3,720sqm store with 260 parking spaces at the Semmence Coaches site.
Plans have also been submitted for a 20,000ft store near the station and a brownfield site off Norwich Road.
The long-running saga over the Kings Head Meadow site ended in February at an extraordinary general meeting at Kett’s Park in Wymondham. when the council agreed to rescind a resolution made in September to sell the meadow to Asda
The U-turn followed a concerted campaign by action group Wymondham Asks Why (WAW) against the plans to sell the site, which is home to Wymondham Town FC and children’s play facilities.
The WAW group does not want to see a greenfield site providing public recreation space, including a children’s play area, being taken by the store. Traffic was also a concern.

Couldn't Morrisons and other retailers in Dereham sponser the Mid Norfolk Railway so that Wymondham residents could use the train to shop in Dereham?
