Howzat for Holy Trinity

HOLY Trinity enjoyed a clean sweep at the Asda Kwik Cricket competitions at Redlands.

One hundred and 70 children from nine primary schools across Weymouth and Portland enjoyed the sunshine and demonstrated great enthusiasm and skilful play as they took part in the three events – Year Five boys, Year Six boys and Year Six girls.

And it was Holy Trinity who prevailed in each competition, meaning they will now go forward to the county finals at Bryanston School later on this month, accompanied by fellow qualifiers Bincombe (Year Six girls) and Southill (Year Five boys).

The presentation ceremony produced a great atmosphere and Tim Hill, chairman of the Dorset Schools Cricket Association, praised the preparation carried out by the groundsman before expressing his delight at the number of children taking part.

After he congratulated the overall winners, Hill presented all of the Year Five schools with their certificates before introducing West Dorset head coach Sean Fitzgerald to present the Year Six girls’ teams with theirs, and Asda’s Andy Felix to do likewise for the Year Six boys’ teams.

Hill said: “Thanks go to Stuart Heath (Wey Valley School) for providing the leaders from his school who umpired and scored with spectacular accuracy, and Ben Heath, whose Weymouth College sports students supported the event coaching the children.

“Much deserved praise was lavished on them by the staff of the participating schools – Beechcroft, Bincombe, Holy Trinity, Radipole, Southill, Southwell, St Augustine’s, St George’s and Underhill – especially for setting up practices and mini games while teams were waiting to take part in the competition.

“Sean Fitzgerald also worked closely with the leaders and college students.

“Asda, who sponsor the Kwik Cricket competitions nationally, have always been particularly supportive in this district and, once again, they came up trumps with supplies of fruit and bottles of water.

“Ever eager to promote links with their club, Weymouth Cricket Club president John Cake and development officer Hugh Lawes were also on hand to give information about what was on offer.

“And finally, Gill Jones, Dorset Cricket Board competition and match manager, who organised the day magnificently, was delighted it went so well and had the final word in thanking all those who gave their time to help make the day such a success.”

Swindon singer tipped to be a star of X-Factor - This is Wiltshire

Swindon singer tipped to be a star of X-Factor

AN ASDA worker from Swindon is already proving a sensation on this year’s X Factor after taking the opening rounds by storm.

Jahmene Douglas, who works at the supermarket’s store in Haydon Wick, is being tipped as a potential winner even before this year’s series has gone to air.

The singer’s exceptional talent has won him thousands of fans in the town and landed him the title of Swindon Talent winner 2010.

But he took his powerful vocals to a new level last week by wowing the judges with a performance of the Etta James hit At Last.

Insiders have reportedly said he is a ‘shoo-in’ for the ITV1 show’s live finals and likened him to Dublin Tesco worker Mary Byrne.

She finished sixth in 2010 but quit her job and recorded a double-platinum selling album called Mine And Yours.

Jahmene had a previous taste of success when he won Swindon Talent 2010 by a unanimous decision and was given a standing ovation after the verdict was announced.

He said at the time: “It feels unreal – I’m used to just walking off and hoping that people liked it.

“It’s like a door has opened – this means I can carry on singing and hopefully go to London.

“My mum was in the audience and this will mean so much to her as well. I’m so grateful.”

The former New College student, who wants to be a professional singer, returned to launch last year’s contest.

He also performed at the Wyvern Theatre’s Last Night of the Proms in November and brought the house down with a brief set at Swindon 105.5’s fourth anniversary event in March.

Jahmene also helped Partners Theatre Company, a group of actors with disabilities who meet at the Wyvern Theatre, to record its first single.

The gospel, soul and R&B singer is currently unsigned but looks to finally be on the road to stardom.

However, if chosen for the live finals he will have to win round judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Louis Walsh and a fourth celebrity to be announced.

But he has already been given the nod on his Facebook page, with one fan writing: ‘Jahmene to win the X Factor!’

New jobs created as ASDA's home shopping service launches - Western Telegraph

New jobs created as ASDA's home shopping service launches

Around 28 new jobs have been created by ASDA at its Pembroke Dock store with the introduction of a home shopping service , due to be launched today (Wednesday).

The ‘seven figure investment’ includes three specially equipped delivery vans, which will transport goods to locations as far away as St Davids.

Customers will be able to order online from the comfort of their homes and select a delivery time that is convenient for them.

Home Shopping manager Patrick Hannon said the investment showed Asda’s commitment to west Wales.

“The new Home Shopping service allows us to serve the populations of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion even further.

“It will also further enhance the levels of service and value that we are able to offer our customers.”

He added: “Of course the major benefit, apart from being able to help customers who currently cannot afford the time to travel at the moment, is the ability to help those who do not have full mobility, to help them enjoy the same products and service on offer to those that can travel.”
