Rain holds off as county recognises her 60 year reign
Nearly 200 beacons were lit across Kent last night as the weather finally relented to prevent the nationwide show of respect to Queen Elizabeth II turning into a damp squib.
After a weekend of heavy rain, which had put paid to a number of street parties and dampened the party spirit, the rain held off as the beacons were lit at around 10.15pm.
Kent had the highest number of any county in the UK.
The lighting was carried out to coincide with the Queen igniting the final beacon - the last of some 4,000 lit around the UK - at the end of the special pop concert held outside Buckingham Palace last night.
