Provincial titles for Spartan duo - icDerry

TRACK AND Field dominates again this weekend with local clubs City of Derry Spartans and Olympian heading to Antrim on Sunday for the first round of the National League.

And Connor Bradley, fresh from his 1,500m Provincial title success at the same venue last Monday, will be in Watford tomorrow for the BMC Grand Prix meeting.

In New York Jason Smyth will face a top class field in the Diamond League 100m with the pressure on the Spartan to deliver that elusive Olympic qualifying standard of 10.17s.

Hopefully the weather conditions will favour the Eglinton man this weekend. He is certainly capable of running the required time and thus making athletics history as the first to contest both the Olympics and the Paralympics. London hosts both championships and all sports fans would be delighted if Jason can make it to both later this summer.

Meanwhile the big meet of club athletics, the National League will once again see City of Derry and Olympian take the first steps in this year’s competition in Antrim on Sunday. Both local clubs will have men’s and women’s squads in action with qualification for the National Finals the targets.

Both women’s squads will be in direct opposition in Division One and will have Tallaght AC, Sligo County, Louth County, and Sli Cualain AC from Wicklow as the opposition on Sunday.

The Spartans are targeting promotion to the Premier Division and will have to perform consistently over the two qualifying rounds and the Final itself to realise their goal.

The squad is a good mix of youth and experience and looks strong enough across the board to make the final and then push on for one of the two promotion places on offer. Olympian have a less experienced squad and will be keen to blood their athletes in the cut and thurst of major team competition.

The Olympian men did very well last year to make the Division One Final and would have been boosted by John Coyle’s excellent 100m bronze medal last Monday in Antrim.

They will need cover across all 15 scoring events in the League and with Lagan Valley, Sligo County, Louth County, Sli Cualain and Kildare County to contend with, big performances will be required.

The male Spartans have retained their Premier Division status and will hope to have a better campaign this time after a depleted squad struggled last year.

Again a mix of youth and experience will carry the colours but a few key men will be missing and this will shift responsibility onto, in some cases, less experienced shoulders.

Connor Bradley will be in Watford and the selections from 800m through to 5,000m and the 3K steeplechase have had the club mentors scrambling somewhat this week.

The Jumpers and Sprinters are all expected to be teenagers and the club has an emerging group to draw from. The experienced steeplechaser Colin Roberts has gone down with a back injury and will be difficult to replace while the Throwers remain thin on the ground but the scoring 17 events will be covered and each individual event will be fiercely contested for the maximum possible points.

The opposition includes some of the big names, Raheny Shamrock, Clonliffe Harriers and North Down with Tallaght AC, St Abbans and Meath County another trio who will pose tough tests for the Spartans.

NI/Ulster Medals

Connor Bradley saw off all the opposition at last Monday’s NI/Ulster senior championships to storm home a convincing 1,500m winner.

The Spartan bided his time in a tactical race to out-kick Armagh’s Stephen Kerr and posted a 4m 05.77s gold medal winning time and Mary Devlin claimed the Spartans second senior title of the day when she got out to 11m 63cm to lift the women’s Triple Jump crown.

Mary had earlier taken Long Jump bronze and Declan Reed and JP Williamson finished second and third in the men’s 5,000m. Defending champion Reed was surprised by North Belfast’s Connor Magill who took gold on 14m 58.42s, ahead of the two red vests on 15m 03.51s and 15m 09.82s.

Caitlin Ketelar claimed the women’s Javelin silver medal and Andrew Bolster senior bronze and U18 gold in the 400m Hurdles with a 58.26s clocking.

Olympian’s John Coyle put in a blistering finish to grab the senior men’s 100m bronze in 11.18s and Amy Jackson built on her Irish Schools 1,500m bronze to finish 5th overall in a competitive women’s 800m, her 2m 19.51s giving her the U18 silver medal.

Ryan McParland ran 11.42s for 100m to take the U18 silver; Mark McGarvey leapt 6m 44cm for silver in the U19 Long Jump and there were also underage medals for Tamara Boyle in the 400m, Fiona Mallett in the Triple Jump and Olympians Bronagh Doherty and Olive Webb.

Double Olympic celebration for siblings - Croydon Guardian

Double Olympic celebration for siblings

One family will enjoy a double celebration this summer after a brother and sister were both selected for Olympic duties.

Jessica Maclean, 14, from Wimbledon Chase, was nominated by a friend for her commitment to sport, despite having suffered with scoliosis of the spine and a long term heart condition.

Meanwhile her brother Sam, 17, a student at Raynes Park High School, has been selected to be an Olympic ball boy at Wimbledon.

Miss Maclean, a student at Nonsuch High School, is captain of the hockey team, a member of the under 15 Wimbledon AFC football team and plays tennis and athletics.

Forced to wear a back brace daily, which she can remove during sport, Miss Maclean is due to have a major spinal operation later this year.

Her mother, Liz Maclean, said: "They wanted to operate earlier but when they found out she was carrying the flame they said it could be later.

"We are so proud of them both - even if we didn't get Olympic tickets, we still have Olympic children".

The young sportswoman, who was diagnosed with a heart condition at a young age causing her heart to spontaneously race, was often rushed to hospital throughout her school life - a condition she recently underwent an operation to correct - but has never let her condition get in her way. On being nominated Jessica said: "I have always believed in myself and told myself that I could do anything if I tried hard enough and this has helped me to get where I am today.

"I have always enjoyed sport and despite being diagnosed with Scoliosis (a spine condition) and SVT (a heart condition) I have been determined not to let anything stop me achieving my dreams of playing and achieving in sports."

However Jessica will not be running with the Olympic torch when it passes through Merton on July 23, but half an hour away in Lewisham.

Former Olympic champion Ray Stevens and Haydon the Womble have also been ousted from the borough and told to run in Kent and Sutton.

In fact none of the torchbearers running through Merton are actually from the borough.

Mrs Maclean said: "We are quite upset, considering her address is in Merton, that she’s running in Lewisham.

"We would much prefer to be in Merton because obviously we live here.

"We will support the Merton flame anyway, but is such a shame that she’s not running in Merton."

Maria Sharapova wins French Open by beating Sara Errani - BBC News

Maria Sharapova blasted her way to victory over Sara Errani in the French Open final to become only the 10th woman to complete a career Grand Slam.

Sharapova, 25, claimed a one-sided 6-3 6-2 win to add to the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles from earlier in her career.

Career Grand Slam holders

Maureen Connolly Brinker (US)

Doris Hart (US)

Shirley Fry Irvin (US)

Margaret Court (Aus)

Billie Jean King (US)

Chris Evert (US)

Martina Navratilova (Cze/US)

Steffi Graf (Ger)

Serena Williams (US)

Maria Sharapova (Rus)

The Russian overwhelmed her Italian opponent, who was playing in her first Grand Slam singles final.

Sharapova's run in Paris has also moved her top of the women's rankings.

At a time when the women's game is lacking a dominant and consistent figure, Sharapova provided more evidence that she is capable of filling that vacuum.

Since she was last world number one in June 2008, the top ranking has been held by eight different players and changed hands on 15 occasions, while the last six Grand Slams have been won by six different women.

Sharapova, who has battled back from shoulder surgery that threatened her career and severely disrupted her serve, produced a display of power and precision which will now see her head into Wimbledon as a strong favourite.

She and Errani had never met before and, while the Russian was the clear favourite, her opponent posed a threat having won three clay court tournaments coming into the French Open.

But the Italian had her first two service games broken and struggled to handle the power of her opponent's game.

Match stats

The Russian had lost her last two Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the Australian Open but was clearly determined not to slip up again.

Errani engineered a break back to register her first game but it was a temporary reprieve as Sharapova claimed a third set point with a backhand down the line.

Sharapova broke to love at the start of the second set and despite Errani drawing cheers from the crowd with some adventurous shotmaking, it was not enough to disrupt the second seed.

Errani had won the women's doubles title with Roberta Vinci on Friday and, after her semi-final win over Samantha Stosur, said she had to start showing greater belief against more illustrious opponents.

But the Bologna-born right-hander rarely looked like she thought she could overcome Sharapova and after wasting a break point in game four, she was broken again in game five.

Sharapova set up her third match point with a magnificent running forehand winner up the line, and converted it when Errani sliced a tame backhand into the net.

It was her first Grand Slam title since the 2008 Australian Open and she sunk to her knees in celebration.

Watford fans owe it all to Graham Taylor - When Saturday Comes

Image 9 June ~ On May 3o, Watford announced that Graham Taylor would be stepping down from his role as chairman of the board, a position he had held since December 2009. He had accepted the role when the club was facing another serious financial crisis that threatened its immediate future. But Taylor had no intention of returning to a formal role in the long term. In two separate spells as manager, he took the club into the top flight, starting from the fourth tier in 1977 and the third in 1997. Without Taylor Watford would be unrecognisable. It has always been difficult for Watford fans to reconcile the father-like character who built their club with the man who became a hate figure during and after his doomed international career.

As manager of Wolves in 1995 he was spat on by a Sheffield United fan, a shocking act of indefensible cowardice and spite against a man who had valued the role of supporters when others had lined up to demonise them. It’s easy to forget the way football was perceived in 1980s England, but while Ken Bates wanted electrified fences to control fans, Taylor’s Watford were reaching out to the local community.

His methods were always going to annoy purists, but Taylor has always had the football club at the heart of his philosophy. He loves football clubs because of their importance to the fans and the social function they provide, so he would never want to see Watford left to rot.

During his brief spell as chairman there was a well-documented falling out with current owner Laurence Bassini. Taylor criticised Bassini’s failure to attend a fans forum and answer their questions about his long-term intentions for the club. The rift was patched up, but it is doubtful there was much mutual admiration between the two men.

Does Taylor’s decision to step down mean he is satisfied the club is in safe hands, or that it is not his fight any more? The club had a much better 2011-12 season than many had expected, and insolvency does not appear to be an immediate threat. There may never be a right time for Taylor to say goodbye, but the waters are certainly calmer. Indeed, as hard as it is to contemplate, Watford fans should hope they do not need to look to Taylor’s leadership again. No one has done more for Watford, but the club must learn to cope without him. Former stars at 'grand reopening' (From This Is Local London) - This is london Calling

Former Watford stars will be at Yellow and Red Lion 'grand reopening'

The Yellow and Red Lion pub will have its "grand opening" on Monday.

The pub reopened on match days on April 6, after closing in 2006, but will now be welcoming punters from 11am to 11pm every day after Monday, when it will open from midday.

Former players Luther Blissett, Nigel Callaghan, Ian Bolton, Steve Terry, Allan Smart and Derek Payne are expected to be among those at the Yellow and Red Lion on Monday, when there will be a hog roast and mini ale festival.

Watford FC decided to have the "grand opening" on Monday in time for England's campaign at the European Championships - their first game is against France at 5pm - and the club will be doing special promotions based on how Roy Hodgson's men perform.

Look forward to seeing how much the pub has changed since the end of the season. Maybe we will now be able to understand where the £500,000 spent on this pub has gone. Or has it GONE? Reginald Dwight

My understanding from Neil Price was that the figure was nearer £380,000. Even so, now that it is fully open. It shouldn't take that long to recoup the expense and therefore be a welcome addition to the Watford coffers. Surbiton

It seems recent speculation has some foundation and some of the more passionate objectors to Baszini may have been correct all along. My cousin has an invoice that is now 4 months overdue. The answer when chasing the club is that they don't have funds to pay at the moment!! How can they not have had any funds for 4 months??? He is politely told that it is the same for all suppliers. The club should be ashamed that they are receiving services and not paying for them. How is everyone else meant to survive? Much as a new pitch is needed it shouldn't be at the cost of other inferior people being paid for services they've supplied in good faith. Do we really believe this owner has spent £500k on a pub as a gift to fans and £1m on a pitch when he won't make funds available for anything else? Maybe when the company doing the pitch don't get paid we will be in real trouble if they down tools and leave us without the ability to stage matches........ Reginald Dwight

Northants v Essex: Bopara hits second century in a week - BBC News

Ravi Bopara scored his second century in a week as Essex and Northants played out a draw in the County Championship.

Bopara, who hit 120 in Essex's CB40 victory over Gloucestershire on Monday, made 174 and shared a fifth-wicket stand of 294 with James Foster (135).

Essex declared on 400-6 as David Willey took 3-74 for the hosts.

James Middlebrook (100) then became the game's third centurion as the captains shook hands on a draw the moment Northants reached 200-3 in reply.

Earlier, Bopara and Foster's partnership surpassed the previous record fifth-wicket stand for Essex against Northants of 147, made between Mark Pettini and Matt Walker in this fixture last season.

Northants take six points from the game and are fourth in the Division Two table, while Essex gained nine points and lie seventh.
