Tesco launches new online supplier portal - Retail Bulletin

Supermarket giant Tesco has launched a new web portal for suppliers as it looks to give them increased visibility around customer buying habits and promotional activity.

The supermarket said the Tesco Connect portal will help suppliers to identify product trends, prepare for upcoming promotions, and assist them in responding quickly to changes in customer demand.

Tony Mitchell, Tesco’s supply chain director said: "We are always looking for new ways to improve the service for customers and the information and insight shared through Tesco Connect comes from several years of development and technical innovation."

Suppliers such as Innocent, Nestle and Unilever were involved in a pilot of the portal which Tesco said delivered measurable benefits including reducing the number of shortages by more than a third.

Mitchell added: "We’ve already had some fantastic feedback from the suppliers who have worked with us on the new portal. Many of them have told us that the forecast data has begun to change the way they work and will help re-focus their efforts."

Update on Watford's Stephen McGinn and Reading target Adrian Mariappa

Watford have rejected Reading’s bid for Adrian Mariappa but the immediate future of team-mate Stephen McGinn remains in doubt.

Mariappa was the subject of a bid in excess of £2m, including add-ons, but the Hornets have confirmed the offer has been rejected.

The 25-year-old, pictured, has enjoyed the best season of his career, picking up the Watford Observer Player of the Season Trophy, and with only a year left on his contract, the club are likely to receive more bids in the future.

It is unclear whether recently-promoted Reading, whose first-team coach Nigel Gibbs will know Mariappa from his time at Watford, will come back in for the centre-back.

The father of three’s performances in the first half of last season attracted the interest of Premier League sides Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic, who both made bids for the defender.

We understand there have not been any fresh bids for Mariappa, or any other Hornets players, in the last week.

Whilst Mariappa’s long-term future remains unclear, it is McGinn’s failure to sign a new contract with Watford which will be of immediate concern to Hornets followers.

McGinn’s current deal expires on June 30 and despite a new contract being on the table for some time, the midfielder has yet to sign.

The Hornets hierarchy have not given up hope that the player will put pen to paper though, despite his contract expiring in three weeks time.

The 23-year-old has not played a competitive game since February 2011 after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in a collision with team-mate Adam Thompson and forward Jason Euell.

McGinn, who has scored two goals in 42 appearances since his arrival from St Mirren in 2010, returned to full training in March and played a handful of Reserve matches towards the end of last season, but was not handed a first-team outing.

Surely the club can give McGinn a timeframe or he should at least communicate with the club as to why he hasn't signed the new offer? AngelHornet

Unfortunately none of us meagre fans are party to contract negotiations so we do not know whether it is at the same, higher or lower terms than his current one. We do not know as to whether there are any ongoing negotiations. We do not know how far apart the two parties are. Therefore it is a bit harsh to lay it all on McGinn saying he is ignoring the contract offer or not communicating with the club - it may be the case but we do not know. I hope he does sign and I hope that he is being reasonable in negotiations, conversely I hope Watford are being reasonable as well. stevyweavy

I thought McGinn was rubbish when he first arrived, but looked a lot better in his last 6 months in the team. Perhaps he would need a long run to get himself back to that level. With Murray; Hogg and Eustace ahead of him is he unlikely to get that run in the first quarter of the season. At his age that might be a consideration as he needs first team football. If he re-signs i can see him going out on loan to Brentford type of team to get some sharpness back. I doubt he is good enough for Cardiff - wrong complexion for the red shirt. Mariappa seems odd - I am sure he will go to Reading. As part of the deal the fact that they share a pitch with a rugby team and can play decent Championship winning football might be worth for some tips on how they manage the playing surface for when we agree to let Wasps share the stadium. Well done Bas ... proved the 'crappers' wrong again, as usual ... Mapps worth more than the Reading offer, although I'm sure he will go, but great to see holding out for the right offer ...hopefully from a REAL prem club ... not a yo yo side COGGDAVE1
