Tesco trading update set to underline declining UK performance - MyFinances.co.uk

Next week sees vital trading updates from both Tesco and Sainsbury’s as the battle to gain the initiative in the UK’s supermarket wars continues.

Tesco announces its latest trading update on Monday as it fights to win back shoppers lost over the last six months. It is expected to reveal a fall of 1.7 per cent in like-for-like UK sales in the quarter to May 26th. The trading update will not include the Diamon Hubilee Bank Holiday period.

In January Tesco announced its first profits warning for 20 years following a disappointing Christmas trading period where it lost ground to rivals such as discount grocers Lidl and Aldi. This led to its share price falling to a three-year low and this has not recovered so far.

Since then, the head of UK operations, Richard Brasher has left, leaving Chief Executive, Philip Clarke to lead the fight back. Mr Clarke decline his bonus for 2011 because of Tesco’s poor performance.

However, the update on Monday is expected to show Tesco has not been successful in winning back the lost ground through the heavy discounting strategies and a £1 billion recovery plan that has been the strategy in the opening months of 2012. This will increase the pressure on Mr Clarke whose strategy to improve the supermarket's performance has involved hiring more staff, especially for fresh produce sections and revamping many of its stores.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s is expected to have had a successful trading period over the Queen’s Golden Jubilee holiday that will be illustrated when it announces its trading update on Wednesday which will be for the 12 weeks to June 9th. Its chief executive, Justin King will reveal just how much party food, champagne and bunting sales the supermarket moved over the long weekend,

Sainsbury’s is expected to announce like-for-like sales growth of just under two per cent, slightly down on the 2.6 per cent increase reported for the previous quarter. Tesco is expected to announce a 1.5 per cent fall in UK like-for-like sales, though group sales should increase by around 2.5 per cent. Its trading period will not include the Golden Jubilee Bank Holiday.

Asda delivered sales growth of 2.2 per cent in its last reported quarter

French Open 2012 Scores: Disappointments Who Will Rebound at Wimbledon - Bleacherreport.com

The 2012 French Open saw its fair share of disappointment as some of the biggest names in tennis were eliminated much earlier than expected. With Wimbledon play starting June 25, the next opportunity to erase the disappointment from our minds is right around the corner.

The switch from the clay of Roland-Garros to the grass of Wimbledon will be a welcome change for many of the stars who turned in poor performances in 2012's second grand slam. Here are players that are sure to rebound with a good showing at Wimbledon.

Caroline Wozniacki

Wozniacki came into the French Open as a favorite to advance to at least the quarterfinals—especially after Serena Williams' loss. Coming in as the ninth ranked player in the world, much was expected of the 21-year-old. Unfortunately, Wozniacki was unable to live up the hype as she was ousted by Kaia Kenepi in just the third round.

While Wozniacki's early exit was disappointing, she should fare much better at Wimbledon. Wozniacki has been much more consistent on the grass of Wimbledon than at the French—she has made it to the fourth round in each of the last three years and holds a 12-5 record in the tournament.

The young Wozniacki is still developing as an elite player, so some inconsistency is to be expected. Look for her to come to Wimbledon ready to make people forget about her French Open performance.

Serena Williams

The most shocking upset of the French Open was Serena Williams' first-round loss to Virginie Razzano. Williams came into the French ranked No. 5 in the world, but turned in an awful one-and-done performance at Roland Garros.

The fact that Williams struggled at the French shouldn't affect her going into Wimbledon, though—she has always struggled on clay. Williams is a mere 39-10 in the tournament and has only won it once. By contrast, Williams is 60-8 at Wimbledon and has won the tournament four times.

Coming off of a disappointing performance in the French to dominate at Wimbledon is nothing new and a rebound performance is to be expected.

Victoria Azarenka

Azarenka may have lost her No. 1 ranking to Maria Sharapova, but Wimbledon will offer her a great opportunity to gain it back.

Azarenka saw an early exit in the fourth round of the French Open after losing straight sets to Dominika Cibulkova. For the No. 1 player in the world to be beaten that badly is disappointing, so Wimbledon will be key in regaining her status as the best player in the world.

Azarenka has been fairly successful at Wimbledon making an appearance in 2011's semifinals and posting a 15-6 record for her career in the tournament. Azarenka should continue to improve on her 10-1 record in slam matches this year and could even add her second grand slam title of 2012 with a great showing at Wimbledon.

Navratilova tells Stosur to lift her game - WA today

MARTINA Navratilova is demanding answers from Samantha Stosur and the tennis matriarch wants them at Wimbledon.

Navratilova was left flabbergasted by Stosur's shock French Open semi-final loss to Sara Errani, but is even more flummoxed by the Australian's appalling record at the All England Club. Despite boasting one of the best serves in women's tennis, Stosur has progressed beyond the third round just once in visits to London's SW19 grasscourts.

''I would like to ask her what the heck is going on with her at Wimbledon. She's five and nine at Wimbledon lifetime,'' Navratilova said. ''It's like she should be winning there more than here, but she has more confidence on clay.''

Navratilova put Stosur's surprise demise in Paris down to being ''nervous playing somebody that she's never lost to before, she should beat''.

''She would have been better off playing Maria [Sharapova] or [Petra] Kvitova in the semi-finals,'' she said. ''But you have to win the matches that you're supposed to win and then you have to win the matches you're not supposed to win to win a slam.

''She did that last year at the [US] Open against Serena [Williams], but couldn't find her best tennis. She's still streaky and I don't understand.''

While Stosur has been lauded for her powerhouse game, Navratilova - who does actually believe in the Australian - insists the 28-year-old world No. 6 needs to be more of a lightweight than heavyweight to realise her full potential.

''If I were her coach, I would concentrate on footwork, just becoming lighter, more of a featherweight boxer rather than a heavyweight,'' the 18-time grand slam champion said. ''She's powerful, but she needs to feather it.

''If she would have been able to do that yesterday, I think [it] would have been a different story. [When] you get nervous, the feet stop moving even more so. But if you're light on your feet to begin with, even if you get nervous, you can still handle it.

''So technically she just needs [to] clean up her game a little bit. But most of all, she just needs relax a little bit and not put so much pressure on herself.

''She did that great in New York; then she failed in Australia (on a) very similar surface.''

■Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy won their first grand slam doubles title, beating Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova of Russia 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the French Open women's doubles final on Friday.

Errani became the first player since Kim Clijsters in 2003 to reach the singles and doubles final at Roland Garros.

By Fehintola Betiku

The Only Way Is Essex has proved to be very lucrative for all those who have bagged starring roles in the popular ITV show.

Having joined the cast towards the end of series five Danni Park-Dempsey didn't really get a chance to make an impact with viewers.

So now that the cast are having some downtime new girl Danni stepped out last night in Essex in an outfit that would have made anyone think she has a leading role in the show.

The bubbly Essex girl stunned in a very short flowing white chiffon skirt which showed off her toned legs as she headed to Funky Mojoe in South Woodford.

She teamed the skirt with a beige shirt which was unbuttoned to ensure her ample cleavage was on display as she hit up TOWIE's hotspot.

Danni completed her look with a pair of strapped metallic skyscraper heels and she accessorised with a silver crucifix necklace and several beaded bracelets.

Excited to hit the town with her girl pals, earlier in the day the reality TV star took to her Twitter page to update her followers.

She tweeted, 'Can't wait for @FUNKYMOJOE tonight with all my girls x'

Enjoying the evening and starting to feel the effects of the alcohol, she tweeted, 'Wow I let my hair down for one night and one night only #tipsy #love x'

Showing off her assets: The 21-year-old tweeted that she had allowed herself to let her hair down for once

Last night before the 21-year-old retired to her bed she posted one more tweet which read, 'Night had the best night x'

Danni's appearance last night differed in comparison to the few times she received cameos in the Bafta award-winning show where she seemed to be plain Jane.

In the last episode of TOWIE Danni looked dressed down as she sat comforting Lucy Mecklenburgh alongside her BFF Lydia Bright when she donned a navy blue play suit.

Essex and Suffolk links to international coaches - East Anglian Daily Times

THE appointment of former Suffolk cricketer Richard Pybus as coach of Bangladesh has re-affirmed the rich seam of coaching talent with Suffolk and Essex links.

Former Sudbury and Halstead pace bowler Pybus, 47, who has been living and coaching in South Africa for several years now, worked with Pakistan at two World Cups.

He was appointed coach of Pakistan in 1999 but sacked just a month into the job after losing three Tests in Australia, and returning to work in South Africa, where he has led Border and Titans to ten championship finals, winning six of them and twice doing the double.

Pybus, who turned to coaching after his playing career was cut short by injury, has now taken on the challenge of coaching Bangladesh on a two-year contract.

Below is a list of cricketers with Suffolk and Essex links who have made their mark in recent years in the coaching world at international level.

Stuart Law: Pybus replaces the former Essex batsman as coach of Bangladesh. Law stood down less than a year into his two-year contract for family reasons. The Australian was a popular player at Chelmsford between 1996 and 2001 before a falling out saw him move to Lancashire.

Andy Flower: The former Zimbabwe wicket-keeper and batsman played for Essex from 2002 until 2006, before being assistant coach of the England team in 2007. Following the departure of Peter Moores in 2009, Flower became the full-time England team director.

Graham Gooch: The former Essex and England captain took over as head coach of Essex from 2001 until 2005. He remained as the county’s batting coach and in 2009 he was appointed as England’s ‘temporary’ batting coach, which subsequently became a permanent role. He stepped down as Essex’s batting coach after he was appointed full-time to the England role earlier this year.

Keith Fletcher: The ex-Essex and England captain was England team manager from 1993-1995. He subsequently returned to Essex as first-team coach before stepping down in 2001.

Alan Butcher: The former Surrey and Glamorgan batsman was coach of Essex in 1993 and later coached Surrey from 2005 until 2008. Butcher, who won one Test cap for England, was appointed coach of Zimbabwe in 2011 and has overseen their return to Test cricket.

Grant Flower: Following his retirement from Test cricket in 2004, Grant followed his brother Andy to Essex, where he played for six seasons, combining playing with being batting coach in 2010 before retiring to take up the role as Zimbabwe’s batting coach. He made a surprise, but brief return to the national side, before retiring in January last year to concentrate on his role as batting coach.

Ian Pont: The ex-Essex fast bowler was named as Bangladesh bowling coach in September 2010, but decided not to extend his contract beyond the World Cup early last year when they had a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals after beating England. In March this year he was head coach of the Dhaka Gladiators side that won the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League.

Don Topley: The former Essex bowler, who is now a cricket coach at the Royal Hospital School at Holbrook, just outside Ipswich, coached Zimbabwe between 1990 and 1992, famously leading the minnows to victory over England, captained by Gooch, by nine runs at the 1992 World Cup in Australia.
