Two Fat Ladies statue set to return to Wimbledon

The popular statue known as “The Two Fat Ladies” will make its long-awaited return to Wimbledon next week.

The sculpture was moved from its normal location outside the Rotunda entrance, next to Wimbledon station, when construction work began earlier this year, prompting concern it had been permanently removed.

Samantha Brown, marketing manager for the centre, said the statue would return and be unveiled on June 12 by the mayor of Merton, Councillor David Williams.

She said: The sculpture is going to be moved slightly from its original position, as it was directly in the path of the entrance to the centre, but we can promise people that they will only be moving a matter of feet.

“This year marks our 20th anniversary, and the Ladies have been with us from the beginning, so we would never have entertained the thought of letting them go somewhere else.”

The 8ft high bronze sculpture, created by Andre Wallace, was unveiled at the opening of Centre Court Shopping Centre, in September 1992.

Curious that the name 'the two fat ladies' is deemed acceptable for a civic statue especially as they are not even particularly overweight. Tobermory

Kent City Council Weighs Ban of Medical Marijuana Collective Gardens - Seattle Weekly (blog)
To The City Council of Kent:

We, the undersigned, hereby formally petition you, the members of the Kent City Council, to respect the wishes and demands of the voters of Washington State, to act in adherence to the laws adopted by our state in regards to medical cannabis (pursuant to RCW 69.51a), and to cease and desist any and all attacks on qualifying medical cannabis patients, medical providers, and safe access points within the City of Kent.

Our state's voters and elected officials have recognized the need to allow safe access to medical cannabis for qualifying patients, and have declared that those who cannot provide themselves with said medical cannabis are within their rights to procure a provider; "Qualifying patients may create and participate in collective gardens for the purpose of producing, processing, transporting, and delivering cannabis for medical use" - RCW 69.51A.085.

To deny the citizens of Kent this right will be viewed as lacking compassion, as you would be denying safe and local access to a medicine that has proven to be an effective treatment for a variety of serious ailments.

We would like to state that, as elected representatives, you have a duty to honor the wishes of your constituents, and respect the will of your electors. The will of Kent and Washington State citizens is that qualifying patients should be allowed safe access to medical cannabis. Furthermore, any vote to ban safe access in the City of Kent will be viewed as an action against the will of the residents of the City of Kent, and as a violation of Washington State law.

We ask that you review this letter with great consideration of the harm you will do to your community by denying much-needed medicine to the seriously ill, and through decreasing public safety by forcing these patients to the dangerous black-market, benefiting criminals and criminal organizations. We formally petition you, as the City Council of Kent, to vote against a ban on medical cannabis safe access points within the City of Kent.

Sincerely Signed:

-State Representative Roger Goodman
-State Representative Mary Lou Dickerson
-Sensible Washington

Petra Kvitova slays Varvara Lepchenko to reach the quarter-final draw – French Open 2012 - Bettor.com

Petra Kvitova slays Varvara Lepchenko to reach the quarter-final draw – French Open 2012

Last year’s Wimbledon champion, fourth seed Petra Kvitova blasted her way past the 63rd ranked American contender, Varvara Lepchenko, in the fourth round of the French Open on Monday. The 22-year-old Czech number one wrapped up her emphatic victory in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to earn a place in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam event in Paris, France.

Finally some touch of sheer class and dominance has been seen from the world number four. Kvitova had a dismal season so far due to persistent multiple injuries but her sublime run at the Roland Garros has been extremely promising. She has lost just one set in the four matches she played en route to the quarter-finals and is looking very strong to lift the coveted gold in Paris.

On the other hand, Lepchenko has been the surprise package of the tournament so far, as she outplayed two seeded contenders to reach the fourth round. The American first defeated the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, in the second round and then went on to hunt down the 2010 French open champion, Francesca Schiavone, in the third round brawl. It was expected that Lepchenko will give some tough time to the fourth seed Czech but Kvitova stood too strong for her to be surpassed. The unseeded American secured just three games in the entire matchup before succumbing to the belligerent left-hander.

Kvitova had an ordinary serve precision of just 53 per cent in the contest but she only dropped three points on the first serve, clinching 21 out of 24, en route to victory. She had six break opportunities in the matchup and converted four of them to end the sublime voyage of Lepchenko. The American contender utterly failed to register a single break point throughout the brawl and coughed 15 unforced errors to finish on the losing side in the end.

Up next for Kvitova is the Kazakh qualifier, Yaroslava Shvedova, in the quarter-final round of the French Open. Shvedova defeated the defending champion, Li Na of China, in the fourth round encounter, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, to book a date with the world number four.
