Watford General Hospital's Starfish ward has received £2,000 from Watford Hilton hotel
3:48pm Thursday 31st May 2012 in News By Zoe Forsey, Reporter
A hotel in Watford has donated more than £2,000 to the children’s ward at Watford General Hospital.
Neil Shears, manager of the Hilton in Elton Way, visited the ward on Friday, May 25, to present the cheque to staff at the Starfish Ward.
The ward is currently running a campaign, named Light the Lighthouse, in an attempt to raise £10,000 to improve the service they can offer to sick children and their families.
Zoey Pullar, a senior sister on the ward, said: "Lighthouse is the high-dependency area of our ward where children who require high-intervention care are nursed.
"These children can be acutely unwell and admitted in emergency situations.
"They receive highly-specialised treatment in this area and are constantly monitored until their condition stabilises.
"The nursing and medical intervention for these children is high and in order to enhance the level of care already being received we have identified items of medical equipment which would really help to improve the service.
"Therefore the Hilton hotel’s commitment and donation received today will add a real push to our efforts."
Staff and guests at the hotel have raised the cash over the past year through sponsored events and raffles.
Mr Shears said: "I’m delighted to be able to present this cheque on behalf of the Hilton’s Community Foundation, and add some real motivation to the ward in their fundraising efforts over the summer.
"We take pride in our ongoing commitment to Watford General’s Starfish Ward and look forward to seeing the real benefits to its young patients in a few months time."

League Cup gets new sponsors (From This Is Local London) - This is london Calling
Watford to play in Capital Cup One cup next season
10:58am Friday 1st June 2012 in Latest Sport By Anthony Matthews
Watford will play in a newly-branded League Cup next season after The Football League agreed a four-year sponsorship deal with credit card company Capital One.
The competition will now be titled the Capital One Cup, the draw for the first round of which will be announced on Thursday, June 14.
All Championship, League One and League Two clubs will go into the hat, except for the two highest placed clubs in last season’s table – Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers – with first round ties to be played in the week beginning August 13, prior to the start of the new domestic season on Saturday, August 18.
Those two relegated Premier League clubs will enter at the second round stage, while the seven top-flight teams in European competition – Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Newcastle United and League Cup holders Liverpool – will join the field in the third round.

Matthews happy to have the focus off (From Watford Observer) - Watford Observer
Watford's Elliott Matthews prepares to defend unbeaten professional run
9:40am Friday 1st June 2012 in Sport
Watford’s Elliott Matthews has only been boxing professionally for sixth months but he could be the sport’s best-kept secret.
The super-middleweight competitor has compiled a three-fight winning record and is set to box again in July.
Matthews will be in action on manager Mickey Helliet’s next show at The Coronet in Elephant and Castle on Friday, July 6, but he won’t be complaining if the attention is not on him.
“I’m not getting lots written about me in boxing magazines or websites,” said the 31 year-old. “Nobody seems to know who I am and that means there’s no pressure.
“It feels like I’m a secret, like I’m under the radar and I like it that way.
“I’m going to keep winning, keep creeping up on the big boys and then they can talk about me when I get to the top.
“I’ve only been a professional for six months and I know there’s a lot to learn.
“But as long as I improve in every fight, I will get to the top, no matter how long it takes.
“I see no reason why I can’t be boxing at a good level when I’m 35 years old as long as I keep improving and look after myself.
“My plan is to get to the top in style – and then stay there.
“My manager, Mickey Helliet, has a lot of belief in me and that’s why he’s keeping me busy.”
Matthews was ranked number three in Great Britain and has also already shown what a talent he is, defeating James Smith and Aleksandrs Radjuki in a combined time of less than four minutes.
“They don’t like it when I hit them on the chin,” he said. “When I catch them cleanly they go over.”
But his next fight will be followed by a break over the summer as he allows his body some recovery time.
“All I usually do is work, train and sleep, but I’ve got to give my body a break over the summer so there will be no training for a few weeks.
“I will have to find something else to do – but I haven’t got a clue what.”
Anyone interested in attending Matthews’ next bout can contact him at www.padmanpersonaltraining.com or on 07886 683614.

Wimbledon Village Fair prepares for challenge - Croydon Guardian
Wimbledon Village Fair prepares for 'Big Red Balls' challenge
10:10am Friday 1st June 2012 in Wimbledon By Lauren May
Twenty thousand visitors are expected to flock to Wimbledon Common later this month to enjoy a free day of music, food, and even big inflatable red balls.
The annual Wimbledon Village Fair, organised by charity The Wimbledon Guild, will boast over 200 craft stalls, two food villages and a farmer’s market.
They have also promised dog and horse shows, live music and children’s entertainment including pony rides, Zorb Balls and human table football.
Food lovers will be able to indulge in everything from burgers, hog roast and paella to Thai, Moroccan, Hakka Chinese and Indian cuisine in the fair’s international and British food villages.
The fair will be officially opened at 11am by former Dancing on Ice contestant, free runner and James Bond Actor, Sebastien Foucan.
Foucan, who appeared in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale as Mollaka, will also be taking part in this year’s ‘Big Red Balls’ challenge, based on the BBC1’s Total wipeout show where contestants must jump from one inflatable giant red ball to the next without falling off.
Anyone who can beat Foucan’s time will receive a prize and he will be available for photo opportunities and autographs at the Wimbledon Guild’s Tea Garden at 12pm.
A charity raffle will also take place offering prizes including restaurant vouchers, theatre tickets and spa treatments.
Anna Cullen-Crouch, fundraising manager at the Wimbledon Guild, said: "We are so grateful to everyone who is involved including our sponsors, the volunteers, the stall holders, every member of staff from the Guild and all who help make this event the fabulous day it is".

New stand to be named after Graham Taylor (From This Is Local London) - This is london Calling
Watford owner Laurence Bassini to name new stand after Graham Taylor and also negotiating to clear club's debt
3:42pm Thursday 31st May 2012 in Latest Football News By Anthony Matthews
Laurence Bassini says he will name the new East Stand after Graham Taylor and claims he is in negotiations to clear Watford's debt.
The Hornets owner contacted this newspaper earlier this afternoon to state that he wanted to honour the club's most successful manager, who stood down as non-executive chairman yesterday, and subsequently revealed that he is in the "process of negotiating" to clear the club's overdraft facility and to pay off the bond holders and the matter is now "with the lawyers".
Although the decision to name the stand, when it is built, after Taylor will be popular with the majority of fans, it is the significant financial move that is of arguably greater importance in terms of the club's long-term future.
Bassini stated that, to date, £2.5m plus interest has been paid back to the three bond holders - Lord Ashcroft, director David Fransen and former chairman Graham Simpson - with a figure of around £7.5m still owing. He explained that if negotations are successful, this sum will be paid off and future interest payments waived. Furthermore, the owner is also working to clear the club's overdraft - a facility of £1m according to Bassini.
Fans have taken to the messageboards and social networking sites such as Twitter to pay a host of tributes to Taylor following his decision to step down and Bassini said: "He did so much for this club I am going to name the new stand after him. It will be called the Graham Taylor Stand because I think he deserves it."
The next phase in the redevelopment of Vicarage Road could begin shortly, with the owner also revealing that he would like to start work on the south-west corner as early as next week, as long as the relaying of the Vicarage Road pitch is at such a stage that workmen can gain access to the building.
This structure will accommodate new changing rooms and additional executive boxes, among other facilities, and is expected to take three to four months to complete.

Based on what he has achieved so far he has proved, as has Sean Dyche, that he is good for the club. Improvements are being made and if he can with an early settlement clear previous debts it is all good for him and the club.
If people bothered to ask why the South west corner was slow perhaps they may find that previous management and boards thought we were Man U or City.
Over the last few years we sufferred from a board that understood little, two Chief Execs who were a joke. Remember the prudent management, the cash flows with mega million holes, plan B, Aidy signing ten players in January etc etc..
The trouble is we have too many contributors who open their mouths before engaging their brains or even worse too many who dont even understand the horrendous mistakes made in the last ten years, even some presided over by GT.
Long term Laurence may prove to be the best thing since sliced bread or perhaps the worst thing. Time will tell, but he has not done a lot wrong and until lutondown, Mr Bankrupt can support their nasty claims they would do better to shut it than continue with their unsubstantiated rantings hidden behind their anonymous identities.
Some will say they are entitled to state their views but in reality its is rubbish spouted by lowlife. I think Corbindallas has stated the case as it stands and is factually based, I trust others may take a leaf out of his book in future.
In meantime nice to see that Buck stated a week ago he was determined to see his existing contract out with Swansea. now he is joining Liverpool. At least Mr Integrity is consistent a great manager but not too trustworthy.
