Maldon: Morrisons' expansion plans approved

A MALDON supermarket has been given the go-ahead to expand, paving the way for the creation of 14 new jobs.
When Morrisons first submitted plans to extend its store to accommodate a new customer cafe, new customer toilets, staff facilities and dry cleaning and cigarette counters, traders expressed concerns about the ever-increasing challenges superstores are posing to independent shops.
Russell Martin, who owns and runs Love My Home, in High Street, described the move as “another example of a big retailer taking business from the high street”.
Chris Backshall, owner and manager at Maldon Cook Shop, in High Street, also accepted it would be further competition, but said the competition could also help independent shops who offer something extra.
Morrisons’ plans were initially refused on design grounds, but the supermarket giant can now go ahead after revised proposals got the green light from Maldon District Council’s central area planning committee last Wednesday.
The store floor space will increase by more than a quarter of its existing size, growing from 4,640 square metres to 5,887 square metres.
