£40m Asda expansion to create 450 new jobs - Belfast Telegraph

By Margaret Canning
Tuesday, 3 July 2012

Supermarket giant Asda will bring 450 full and part-time jobs to Co Armagh when it opens its first store in the county, it has announced.

The company has started recruitment for the positions in the £40m Portadown store, which will open in November and will be its 17th in Northern Ireland.

Store manager Robert Ryans said: "This is the first Asda store to open in the Armagh area and we're delighted by the excitement and level of anticipation building in the local area.

"We've a great reputation as an employer and this is reflected in our colleagues who consistently receive amazing customer feedback for the high level of service they provide.

"It is also great to be able to offer the people of Portadown and beyond the chance to become part of our award-winning team and look forward to becoming a valued part of the local community."

The announcement was welcomed by Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry. "This is a substantial number of jobs being created by a international company and is excellent news for the local economy. Asda deserves praise for their commitment to not only create jobs but invest in staff too."

Asda withdraws six Alex James cheeses - thecmuwebsite.com

Alex James

A number of “exotic” cheeses launched by fast food fanatic Alex James with Asda have been withdrawn because, it turns out, they were just too exotic for the Great British Public (aka they tasted horrible).

Six of nine Alex James cheeses have been withdrawn by the supermarket, according to the Daily Star, including cheddar with salad cream, ketchup, tomato and tikka masala. Though sweet chilli and spring onion varieties are still on sale, so all is not lost. An Asda spokeswoman told reporters: “Clearly some of them were ahead of their time”.

In related news, James’ band Blur unveiled two new tracks yesterday and, to the best of our knowledge, neither has been withdrawn from sale yet. So you could got check them out. Or watch this video of Alex doing a cheese-based meet and greet at the world’s biggest Asda.

ASDA in running for new Lydney store in £40million plan - This is Gloucestershire

ASDA is the latest retailer to be clamouring for a new store in Lydney.

Just days after Sainsbury's revealed plans for a supermarket on land at Crump Farm, its rival has announced intentions for a smaller convenience store nearby, part of a £40million investment which would see Federal Mogul move to a brand new site.

Developer Windmill Limited is preparing a combined planning application for an Asda store and new state-of-the-art facilities for the piston manufacturer at the southern edge of Lydney, just off the A48.

The new Federal Mogul finishing shop and offices would be located adjacent to the existing foundry in a move Windmill claims will not only retain and protect existing jobs but that could double the workforce by 2013.

The scheme as a whole could create 250 new jobs.

The Asda store will be a 25,000sq ft food-only community store which represents a £40 million investment to the area.

A Windmill spokesman said the Asda store will provide the funding necessary to construct Federal Mogul's new facilities, and both Federal Mogul and Asda will make a joint presentation to Lydney councillors tomorrow.

On August 3 and 4, the development team will hold a community engagement event for residents and interested parties at the town hall.

Plans will be on display and there will also be an opportunity to speak to the planning team directly and see images of the proposed new store.

Oliver Jones, senior property communications manager for Asda, said: "We welcome what looks set to be a very productive partnership with Federal Mogul.

"This is an exciting proposal and represents a significant investment in the region from both Federal Mogul and from Asda.

"The Asda store will offer increased choice to customers in the area and would be in addition to our existing and proposed stores in the area.

"We estimate that it will create around 250 new jobs as well as the training and community benefits we will seek to provide."

Last month, Sainsbury's unveiled its proposals for a new supermarket between Naas Lane and the A48 as well as new retail units and a market square primarily for the Oakdale housing estate.

Town mayor Bob Berryman said: "It's good for local people in terms of jobs but it's another one away from what will be known as "Old Lydney".

"Everything is moving to the edge of town but with all these new houses, people will need shops."

If it gets the thumbs up from planners, it will be Asda's second new store in the Forest after it won planning permission in Cinderford.
