UK - A £6.4m investment by Morrisons Farmers Boy Deeside - Meattradenewsdaily (blog)

Image provided by Prime Equipment GroupA £6.4m investment by Morrisons on at its Farmers Boy Deeside fresh meat facility will introduce an extensive range of ready-to-eat chicken meals creating 90 new roles at the 600 employee plant.

They will now produce 40 tons of chicken meals a week, supplying all 477 Morrisons supermarkets. This comes on top of the existing deal for sliced meat and deli products. There will be a boost of £1.5m in wages to the economy.

Haulage, distribution and warehouse business FTS Hatswell Ltd is also investing £1m to expand its business, creating another 30 jobs.

The company has taken on a new 67,500sq ft warehouse with the capacity to store up to 12,000 pallets – almost double the number at its current premises, enabling the company to take on new business and increase its turnover.

Both expansions are backed by the Welsh Government with £635,000 through the Economic Growth Fund for Farmers Boy and £150,000 for FTS.

Mario Jacobs, general manager at Farmers Boy Deeside, said: “This investment will ensure that our site is equipped to meet the needs of the business as it continues to grow.

“We are delighted to announce this move will create up to 90 jobs and will look to fill these jobs with local candidates where possible.”

Business minister Edwina Hart said the Welsh Government has recognised agri-food as a priority sector in the economy with the potential to grow and create jobs.

This latest investment follows a major expansion at the 175,000 sq ft plant last year by Morrisons, now its parent company, which saw staff numbers double from 300 to 600.

The current project will involve investment in new equipment and machinery, upgrading some facilities and a re-configuration of the factory floor to accommodate the new food lines

FTS, which employs eighty people, runs a fleet of 55 vehicles and undertakes the storage and transportation of food and other materials across the UK and Europe.

The move to the new base is currently underway and the new base on Deeside Enterprise Zone will be fully operational by June.

Director Colin Broster said support from the Growth Fund had been vital.

He said: “In the current economic climate we would not have gone ahead with the project without this support. We had been toying with this expansion for some time but did not have the confidence given the difficult economic conditions and the fact that banks are not lending.”
