Detectives scour alleyways after Chessington triple stabbing

Detectives are scouring alleyways in Chessington tonight searching for clues after a triple stabbing.

A 22-year-old man was stabbed in the leg during a fight in Leatherhead Road, Chessington, and a 16-year-old and a third teenager also suffered slash wounds.

Pathways through a housing estate between Barwell Lane and a bus stop near Lidl were being searched, suggesting at least two of the teenagers who suffered stab wounds may have run or walked to the bus stop where they were found.

Two arrests have been made, Kingston police said tonight, with one person in hospital.

Nine homes in Nigel Fisher Way near the Merritt medical centre were cordoned off with owners being told they cannot move their cars.  The entrance to the Amy Woodgate old people's home was taped off and being guarded by a PCSO, although staff said they were unaffected.

A police forensic shield was on the ground in an alleyway near Chessington Cricket Club, covering a patch of blood.

One resident who lives in Nigel Fisher Way said their CCTV system may have captured injured teenagers running past.

Another resident in the road said: "I heard a scream but didn't sit up. I heard a sound, someone shouting. I think it was a sound like hurry up hurry up."

A tattoo artist near Lidl said he had helped give medical assistance to one of the injured men at the bus stop although he said the stabbing had not happened there, but declined to say more.

Another resident of Leatherhead Road said police had told him they knew the teenagers.

Akmal Zuparkhodjayev, in the Barwell Kebab shop, said: "We have never had any trouble. That is why I'm so surprised.

"I've been here six to seven years and never seen anything like that."

Paul Wilson, who lives in Leatherhead Road, said: "It's usually quiet around here."

Another resident of Charles Babbage Close, near the alley where blood marks were found, said: "It is very worrying. It is uncharacteristic for this area."

Two men 'injured' in Chessington violent incident (From Your Local Guardian) - Croydon Guardian

Two men 'injured' in Chessington violent incident

Police are blocking off part of the Leatherhead Road through Chessington because of an incident believed near Lidl.

Police cars have cordoned off a bus stop on the A243 road heading towards Hook from Chessington World of Adventures.

An eye-witness said: "They have got riot vans there as well.

"I saw two guys on the floor near Lidl but there was no emergency services by them.

"One man was lying on his side being attended to by a girlfriend or a friend.

"Another was holding a bandage to his head.

"I guessed the guy on the floor was quite badly hurt. He didn't seem alert like the other guy.

"The emergency services were by the Barwell estate. I don't know if they were looking for someone. They turned around and they went to the guy on the floor.

"Even now there's still police cars and undercover cops going down there."

Chessington councillor Andrew Day said: "It seems to be serious. There are a lot of police cars and a Transport for London van. Nobody is saying anything.

"It does not appear to be a traffic incident."

Baker slams council decision on Asda in Newhaven - thisissussex.co.uk

Lewes MP and Transport Minister Norman Baker has slammed the decision by Lewes District Council to grant planning permission for a new Asda store in Newhaven and to refuse the application for a new Tesco store.

Asda won the decision over the Arrowcroft development following a council meeting last Wednesday.

  1. Norman Baker at Newhaven Port

Mr Baker whose Lewes parliamentary seat includes Newhaven warned that the decision may be "an error of historic proportions" wvhich could have serious implications for the town.

Mr Baker says that by favouring the Asda site the decision could undermine the commercial viability of what is left of the retail sector in Newhaven.

Mr Baker said: "Newhaven is at a crossroads and the council's planning committee has chosen absolutely the wrong turning."

He believes that job prospects in the town will suffer by allowing housing and retail developments to be built on industrial land that had previously been protected and that the decision will divert planning resources towards a dead-end road that Newhaven Port says it does not want or need.

Mr Baker says that this will undermine a masterplan for the port which could threaten the port's future which is a vital part of the local economy.

Mr Baker said: "I generally do not comment on planning decisions, as these are properly a matter for the elected local council, but I cannot stay silent on this one. The planning committee has ignored its own officers' recommendation to defer the decision for two months, and taken a bizarre decision which I fear may be very harmful for the future of the town and for the port in particular. They have made an error of historic and far-reaching proportions."

Lewes District Council were asked to comment on the decision but were unable to respond in 24 hours.

Pair remanded in custody after threatening Trowbridge supermarket manager

A man and woman who threatened a supermarket manager with a syringe have been remanded in custody.

Melanie Shawcross, 33, of Roundstone Street, Trowbridge and Kevin Bell, 31, of Berkeley House, Snow Hill, Bath, had gone to Lidl in Trowbridge on Saturday, February 25 to do some shoplifting.

But when they were caught, the incident turned into a robbery when they threatened the manager, who had confronted them.

During the incident Shawcross was hurt and yelled: “You’ve cut my hand: I hope you get Hep C”.

Alex Daymond, defending, said it was not intended to be a robbery, but shoplifting which went wrong.

He said his client had previously been jailed for four years for an attempted knifepoint robbery.

Shawcross and Bell both pleaded guilty to robbery.

David Maunder, for Shawcross, said while his client had previous convictions, there was nothing as serious as robbery.

The case was adjourned until Thursday, June 14, for pre-sentence reports.
