Wright steps into the light - thisissussex.co.uk

LUKE Wright is hoping his injury and illness woes are behind him after striking a fantastic century to help Sussex to victory in their floodlit CB40 match against Yorkshire.

The 27-year-old all rounder blasted 103 off 95 balls as the Sharks made it three wins from three games in the competition last Thursday, to top the early Group C table.

And Wright, who was making his first appearance at Hove since July last year due to a troublesome knee injury and other playing commitments, said it was "special" to come back and score a century, which included 10 fours and two sixes.

The Sussex and England star, who also struck 59 against Northamptonshire in the competition the week before, said: "I am feeling confident from doing well abroad over the winter and it is nice to come back and help Sussex win in front of a capacity home crowd under the lights.

"It was special to get a win and get a hundred. Hopefully, it is something for me to build on for the rest of the season."

Wright also scored 81 and 55 in the LV> County Championship game against Nottinghamshire this week having only recently returned to the Sussex side after contracting a mystery bug while playing in the Indian Premier League.

And he is now hoping the "dark times" are now behind him as he looks to push on this season.

He said: "I had some dark times last year and it was very frustrating, but the physios have done a great job to get me back.

"I am still feeling my way back in energy wise, but that will come as the games roll on.

"I am feeling pretty good now and hopefully, the troubles are behind me."

Wright, who joined Sussex in 2003 and signed a four-year contract extension earlier this year, is also buoyed by his side's start in the CB40 competition, adding that he hoped the Sharks could go on and win a trophy this year.

He said: "We are a good one-day side and we have been for a while. We know that in all groups, teams will beat each other, but the longer we can keep winning, the more chance there is of building a lead, which is important.

"We always have (the belief) we can do it and we are desperate to win trophies."

Wright is also looking forward to the start of the t20 competition next month, which he said is his preferred format of the game.

And if he can continue the kind of form he has showed so far, he could be pivotal to the Sharks' hopes of success in the limited overs game.
