Nottinghamshire moved top of the LV= County Championship Division One table by completing a seven-wicket win over Sussex at the PROBIZ County Ground.

They lead Warwickshire by a single point after wrapping up victory on the final day, although their main rivals do have a game in hand.

Chasing a target of 145 after Sussex had been bowled out for a second-innings 263 on the stroke of lunch, Notts endured a few scares along the way before completing their first championship win at Hove since 1983.

Riki Wessels, whose first-innings 199 helped put his side in control, adopted a positive approach at the start before he came down the pitch to off-spinner Chris Nash and picked out Murray Goodwin on the midwicket boundary, having hit six fours in his 30.

Fellow opener Alex Hales became Sussex captain Mike Yardy's first four-day victim since September 2009 when he edged to slip with the score on 59 and Nottinghamshire still needed 45 runs when Monty Panesar won a leg-before verdict against left-hander Michael Lumb with a ball that kept low.

Samit Patel

Samit Patel struck an unbeaten 50 as Nottinghamshire continued their fine start to the season with a comfortable victory over Sussex

But on a cracked, dry pitch offering the bowlers plenty of assistance Sussex just did not have enough runs to defend.

Samit Patel, dropped in the same Naveed Arif Gondal over by wicketkeeper Ben Brown and then Yardy, hit his sixth four to secure victory and reach an 88-ball fifty. He added an unbeaten 57 for the fourth wicket with James Taylor.

Earlier, Sussex had lost their last six wickets in the morning session for 57 runs including a spell of four for 20 in seven overs to undermine their hopes of posting a more testing target.

Luke Wright reached his second half-century of the match, adding 107 for the fifth wicket with Goodwin, before he was well taken by the diving Chris Read after aiming a loose drive at Andre Adams.

The New Zealand seamer also picked up the key wicket of Goodwin two overs later when the right-hander, whose 74 from 170 balls was his highest score of the season, clipped a length ball straight to midwicket.

At the other end, Patel picked up Brown and Steve Magoffin as he got deliveries to turn and bounce out of the cracks.

James Anyon and Naveed added 32 for the ninth wicket to give Sussex some hope and the visitors needed to take the second new ball to wrap things up as Naveed drove to point off Andy Carter and Panesar edged to Read to give Harry Gurney his first success of the innings.

Stephen Giles-Medhurst promoted to become the leader of Hertfordshire Liberal Democrats

Watford councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst has been promoted to become the leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition group on Hertfordshire County Council.

The former Head of Customs at Stansted Airport, who represents the Oxhey area of Watford, will be taking over from former leader Chris White.

Councillor Giles Medhurst had been the party’s deputy leader before stepping up to the Lib Dem top slot on the Conservative-run council this week.

Councillor Giles-Medhurst said: "I will try to set the high standards that Chris did as leader exposing the weakness of the Conservative-run county council whilst pushing forward policies that benefit all residents, not just a few."

Oh dear - this guy is nasty. I can hear the sudden groan across Hertfordshire at his appointment and a cheer from the Tories across Herts. The headline is misleading too -"opposition leader", the Lib Dems haven't been an opposition to the Tories for years. They're one and the same. sallywatford

Cafe work experience scheme will continue, pledges new owner - Watford Observer

Cafe work experience scheme will continue, pledges new owner

The new owner of a former community cafe in central Watford has promised keep it as a place were vulnerable people can gain valuable work experience.

Lizz Ayre, 24, opened the new Cafe on the Corner last week after the previous charity-run Queen's Community Cafe, in Queen's Road, folded earlier this month.

The community cafe, which had been struggling for some months prior to closure, had been a venue were trouble youngsters and people could go to get experience of a workplace.

Since last year the community cafe had been run by Watford and Three Rivers Home Start, but struggled in the tough economic climate.

However Mrs Ayre, who used to work at West Herts College teaching entry to employment, has said she would continue its outreach role with paid six-month apprentices.

"I felt it needed to be formalised," said the former Parmiter’s School student.

"If people are vulnerable, say at the New Hope shelter, that’s the whole idea, they can build up some skills."

"It will be a six-month programme of work experience and they will get a certificate. It is a paid apprenticeship."

Mrs Ayre, of Shaftsbury Road, said she decided to take on the cafe following a career in the service industry in Watford including at Revolution bar in the town centre.

She said the new cafe would have an "Anglo-French" feel and serve things such as cream teas.

Cafe on the Corner opened last Wednesday and received the backing of the town’s elected mayor Dorothy Thornhill, who attended the launch.
