Glorious Goodwood: Frankel heads top-class Sussex Stakes entries - Chichester Observer

Glorious Goodwood: Frankel heads top-class Sussex Stakes entries - Chichester Observer

Frankel heads 37 entries for the £300,000 Group One QIPCO Sussex Stakes, to be staged on the second day of Glorious Goodwood, Wednesday, August 1.

Run over a mile, the QIPCO Sussex Stakes is the fifth race in the mile division of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

Last year’s winner Frankel is owned by Khalid Abdulla, trained by Sir Henry Cecil and has been ridden by Tom Queally on all his starts.

The four-year-old Galileo colt is unbeaten in 10 races, six at Group One level, and is the best racehorse in the world with a rating of 136 in the latest World Thoroughbred Rankings.

He returned to action in the mile Group One JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 19, when he easily brushed aside his old rival Excelebration to score impressively by five lengths.

Among Frankel’s Group One victories in 2011 was his devastating five-length victory over five-time Group One scorer and top older miler Canford Cliffs in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, a contest termed the “Duel on the Downs”.

Canford Cliffs, who won the Sussex Stakes in 2010, has now retired to stud but his trainer Richard Hannon, who also won the race in 2003 with Reel Buddy and has collected the Dick Hern Trophy for the leading trainer at Goodwood in each of the past four years, has four entries - Dubawi Gold, Harbour Watch, Strong Suit and Trumpet Major.

Strong Suit was on the scoresheet at Glorious Goodwood in 2011 with a comfortable success over Red Jazz in the Group Two bet365 Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs, while Harbour Watch landed the Group Two Audi Richmond Stakes over six furlongs at the same meeting and is unbeaten in three starts.

David Redvers, racing manager to Qatar Racing Limited, the owners of Strong Suit and part-owners of Harbour Watch, said today: “Strong Suit is definitely being aimed at the QIPCO Sussex Stakes - it’s his big target if everything goes right for him.

“We know he enjoys the track at Goodwood and we think the race will be perfect for him.

“The plan at the moment is for him to make his reappearance at Royal Ascot next month in the Queen Anne Stakes, which should hopefully bring him on nicely for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes.

“We will also definitely look at the race for Harbour Watch. He may run also run at Royal Ascot if he is ready in time or alternatively could head straight to Goodwood.

“If he were to go to Goodwood first time out, then we might consider the bet365 Lennox Stakes for him instead.

“So at this stage, we could run one or the other of them in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, or possibly both of them.”

Adam Waterworth, managing director of Goodwood Racecourse, commented: “We would be delighted to welcome Frankel back to Goodwood for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes which he won so impressively last year.

“This year’s entry is two higher than in 2011 and it is refreshing that so many trainers and owners are willing take on Frankel.

“The strong representation of three-year-olds is very pleasing and the QIPCO Sussex Stakes is the first opportunity for milers of that age to meet the established stars at Group One level.”

Champion Irish handler Aidan O’Brien made no less than 14 of the 37 entries including the winners of both Newmarket mile Classics, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, Camelot and Homecoming Queen, as well as Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Power.

The trainer is also responsible for four-year-old Excelebration, who joined Ballydoyle for the 2012 season having previously been trained by Marco Botti. Excelebration has finished second to Frankel on three occasions. Multiple Group One winner So You Think is another possible starter for O’Brien, who has won the QIPCO Sussex Stakes four times - Rip Van Winkle (2009), Henrythenavigator (2008), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Giant’s Causeway (2000).

There are 16 Irish-trained entries in total, with Jim Bolger having entered last season’s Group One Dewhurst Stakes victor Parish Hall, who missed the Irish 2,000 Guineas because of a minor setback. John Oxx could be represented by Born To Sea, who is a sibling to the outstanding Sea The Stars and ran a good race when fifth on his latest start in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Other leading contenders from the three-year-old generation include Irish 2,000 Guineas runner-up Foxtrot Romeo and the Roger Charlton-trained Top Offer, who looked a horse of huge potential when scoring at Newbury last season but ran a disappointing race on his reappearance behind Camelot in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas.

Marco Botti has two to choose from, headed by Crackerjack King, who recently joined the Newmarket-based handler after being trained in Italy by the trainer’s cousin Stefano. Crackerjack King was a high-class performer in Italy, winning the Italian Derby in 2011, while he returned to action with an impressive victory in the Group One Premio Presidente Della Repubblica at Rome’s Capannelle racecourse on May 13. Botti’s other possible starter is Planteur, who ran a good race when third in the Group One Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp on Sunday (May 27).

Other contenders include Chachamaidee, also trained by Sir Henry Cecil, who was successful in the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last season. There are three entries from Godolphin including the Australian import Helmet, who won the Group One Caulfield Guineas in October, 2011, and is now in the care of Mahmood Al Zarooni.

Glorious Goodwood is staged at the world’s most beautiful racecourse over five days, from Tuesday, July 31 through to Saturday, August 4, 2012 inclusive.

Tesco launches virtual window shopping tool for F&F clothing range - Retail Bulletin

You are here: Home | News | Tesco launches virtual window shopping tool for F&F clothing range

Supermarket giant Tesco has launched virtual shopping technology for its F&F clothing range in the windows of three of its central London stores.

Giant posters of F&F clothing displayed in the windows of the Covent Garden, Dean Street and Tooley Street flagship Metro stores use Aurasma technology to allow customers to order the clothing via their smart phones.

Customers can download the Aurasma app and point their smart phones at the posters so the pictures are transformed into moving images. Shoppers can then add the items they like to their virtual shopping basket and collect them the next day from one of the central London stores or have them delivered to an address of their choice.

Emily Shamma, Tesco Clothing online director said: "This is really exciting new technology that we think our customers will enjoy using.  It's a great opportunity to help us to reach new customers who may not be familiar with our full F&F collection.  It’s really convenient for the busy office workers who use Tesco Metro stores in Covent Garden and London Bridge during their lunch break or on their way home after work."

To coincide with the window shopping experience, F&F will also open its first ever pop-up shop in Covent Garden piazza. The F&F store will open to customers for four days over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, from 30 May – 2 June.

To tie in with the Jubilee celebrations, the pop-up shop will offer customers a 1950s-inspired boutique where customers will be able try on a selection of items from the extended online range.  Garments can then be purchased online by scanning a QR ticket or through an iPad station in the shop, and either delivered to an address of the customer’s choosing or collected the next day from the nearby Covent Garden Tesco Metro.

Shamma added: "We are delighted to open our pop-up shop in vibrant Covent Garden for a few days over Diamond Jubilee weekend. Shoppers will be able to see firsthand the excellent extended range we offer at Tesco.com/clothing and take time to enjoy this new shopping experience."

Customers at the F&F pop-up store will also be able to try on garments using the F&F virtual fitting room service.

Mick Newell looks for Notts to take County Championship form into one-dayers - Nottingham Evening Post

THERE are plenty of reasons at present for Notts director of cricket Mick Newell to smile.

Returning from a first win at Hove since 1983, his side put in a thoroughly professional performance to seal a seven-wicket success against Sussex on Monday.

  1. Mick Newell

It puts them top of LV= County Championship Division One after seven games, in which they have yet to taste defeat this year.

For the 2005 and 2010 champions, it is looking bright once again as the season begins to shift its focus onto the one-day format.

And, if Notts want to end their 21-year wait to win a trophy in the shorter format, the next seven days will be pivotal.

To keep Newell smiling down at Trent Bridge, he will be looking to transfer that four-day form into the CB 40 tournament, as they head to Hampshire on Thursday, Durham on Sunday and then entertain Somerset on Monday.

With their solitary defeat this season coming in their only match in this competition, in a rain-affected game in Scotland, Newell knows points need to be scored.

The hat-trick of games will be followed by a four-day fixture with Lancashire, before attention turns to t20 with ten 20-over games on the spin.

Newell knows it will be a busy period, but it is one he is relishing as he prepares to rotate things within his squad.

Darren Pattinson could return from injury in the coming days to make his first appearance this season, and fellow seamer Luke Fletcher could also be involved.

Newell said: "I am certainly going to be sharing the workload around with the bowlers and we will see what we can come up with.

"But Darren Pattinson is nearing being back, as is Luke Fletcher, so that is a boost. They are set to feature at some point.

"Darren, in one-day cricket, has been arguably our best player over the last couple of years so to have him back is very important with the t20s as well.

"We have got to go into these games with a fresh mind-set. The Scotland game was disappointing but we have three games coming up within a few days and if we can win two of them, it keeps us in with a sniff and we can start to put something together in the competition.

"It is a not a pain having the four-day game after these matches and then the t20 starting.

"We have just had a 12-day break before the Sussex game so we are not tired; we are fresh and we have done well in the County Championship. Now we have to start playing better cricket in this type of the game."

Riki Wessels struck 199 against Sussex in the first innings, with Alex Hales hitting 80 as Notts built up a first innings lead of 119 runs.

Wessels also hit a century against Worcestershire and in just three County Championship matches has scored 388 runs. He also scored 172 against Loughborough University in the season curtain-raiser.

He will look to carry that form into the CB 40, as will England star Samit Patel who steered Notts home on Monday with an unbeaten 50, after taking seven wickets in the match.

Newell said: "I did not realise it was about 30 years since we had won down at Hove, it was a really good performance.

"We got down there and the pitch had been designed to suit Sussex more than us and then we lost the toss, so we knew it was going to be tough.

"But Riki produced a fantastic innings. It was a great opening partnership with Hales (171 runs) and it really set us up to get the lead, to get in front.

"It takes an awful lot of effort to get two centuries in three Championship matches and then he also scored a century against Loughborough at the start of the campaign.

"Samit had an excellent game and that is the level of performance you expect from international cricketers.

"We know he is not going to be available all season so it is important when he does play. He contributes and that is exactly what he did.

"I am delighted to be top and to be unbeaten after seven games is an excellent achievement.

"I feel the performance levels have been very high.

"Now we have to carry that on into the one-day matches and make a mark on those competitions."

Newell has turned down the chance to coach Bangladesh, after contact was made regarding the position.

He said while coaching at international level is an ambition, it is not the right time, especially with having a young family in Nottingham.

FTSE falls nearly 2% on Spanish fears but brokers tip out-of-favour Morrisons and Home Retail - The Guardian

As leading shares fell sharply on renewed fears for the eurozone amid rising Spanish and Italian bond yields, a couple of out of favour retailers managed to escape the worst of the downturn.

Morrisons, under pressure recently on concerns about its falling market share, ended 1.7p higher at 275p after positive comments from Galvan Research. Analyst Andrew Gibson said:

Despite difficult conditions, Morrison's May update was in line with its expectations, and this coupled with the ongoing share buyback and the woes of sector leader Tesco suggests that the shares represent a buying opportunity just off the current year lows.

Meanwhile Home Retail, owner of Argos and Homebase, fell 0.8p to 76.6p , outperforming the market following an overweight recommendation from JP Morgan:

It's been a difficult three months. Expectations are low generally and have worsened in the recent poor weather. However, it is still all to play for at Christmas for Argos where capacity exits should benefit and Homebase could have a decent Jubilee-boosted second quarter. The new Argos boss is due to report his views in October. All options are on the table. The market, we think, will be hoping for an accelerated store closure programme, even if it does cost £125m. The risk is he does nothing. The shares look inexpensive on 2014 PE of 7.5 times, in our view, but the sensitivity of the estimates is high, as is the risk/reward.

Overall, after four days of gains, the FTSE 100 finished 93.86 lower at 5297.28. Growing fears about Spain's banks and pressure on Italy were not eased by the European Commission's proposals for closer banking ties, despite an initial burst of optimism. The euro hit new 22 month lows, and European markets also plunged into the red. Disappointing US pending house sales did not help sentiment, ahead of Friday's non-farm payroll numbers. Angus Campbell, head of market analysis at Capital Spreads, said:

The market was hit from all angles today as the latest poll from Greece gave the anti-bailout party the biggest share of the vote, the Italian bond auction was a disappointment and EU economic and industrial confidence data fell sharply in May, much more than expected. All this news flow gave bears the perfect opportunity to push the market lower in a perfect storm of panic which is fanning the problems by causing Spain's borrowing costs to go higher.

Mining groups and banks were - as usual - among the main fallers as investors shied away from risk once more. Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation closed 30.6p lower at 434.6p and Vedanta Resources lost 53.5p to 940.5p. Among the financials, Barclays fell 1.55p to 179.45p and Royal Bank of Scotland ended 0.62p lower at 20p as it fending off questions about executive pay at its annual meeting.

Elsewhere BG agreed to sell its 40% stake in two gas-fired power stations in the Philippines for $360m, freeing up cash to invest elsewhere. Its shares lost 59.5p to £12.24 in the general gloom, but Andrew Whittock at Liberum Capital issued a buy note:

We had valued the interest at $300m - so it confirms our 1570p BG asset valuation but no significant change to forecasts.

A number of companies saw their shares go ex-dividend, including Amec, 40p lower at 975p, and Marks & Spencer, down 12.8p at 332.2p.

Utility companies provided some comfort. Severn Trent rose 42p to £17.06 after better than expected full year profits and news of a proposed £150m return to shareholders.

Chip designer Arm added 1p to 508.5p after Dell said it would offer customers a choice between the company's products and those of rival Intel. Positive comments from Apple - an Arm customer - also helped, as did analysts at UBS suggesting potential cash payouts to investors.

Among the mid-caps Essar Energy rose 25.5p to 141.8p on reports the Indian government had approved its development plans for a coal block in Madhya Pradesh state. The company said it had yet to received any official notification.

Industrial group Cape, which shocked investors a week ago with a profit warning after running into trouble with its projects in Algeria, climbed 7.5p to 238p after appointing a new chief executive. Joe Oatley, former chief executive of engineering group Hamworthy, will join in June.

Centamin, the Egypt-focused mining group, added 2.5p to 64.25p after a new five year plan for its Sukari gold project. It expects to double last year's production by 2014

Finally Booker jumped 7.9p to 87p after the cash and carry group paid £139.7m for the UK businesses of Germany's Metro, which trades under the Makro name. The deal involves Booker paying £15.8m in cash and the rest in shares, which would give Metro a 10% stake in the company.

Tesco is introducing a new subscription service for customers ordering groceries online.
