Tesco is introducing a new subscription service for customers ordering groceries online.
The Delivery Saver service, which launches nationwide today, offers the supermarket’s online customers the option to pay once and have groceries delivered at no extra cost for either a three-month or a six-month period.
Tesco claims that shoppers signing up for six months could save up to £100 on delivery charges, based on one £6 delivery per week and one extra delivery for a special occasion.
Ken Towle, internet retailing director at Tesco, explained: "We listened to what our customers told us they wanted, and Delivery Saver is the result. It’s simple to use and will save money at a difficult time for many families. Customers can choose from all available delivery slots, so shopping arrives at the most convenient time. Best of all, if you get regular home deliveries it will quickly pay for itself – and the more you use the service, the more you save."
Tesco said the nationwide roll-out of Delivery Saver follows a successful trial with its customers in the South West, covering 37 stores.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) revealed details of the food and drink that will be served to the millions of spectators and thousands of athletes during the Games this summer.
(PRWEB) May 31, 2012
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) revealed details of the food and drink that will be served to the millions of spectators and thousands of athletes during the Games this summer.-
Over 14 million meals will be served during the Games, across 40 locations – the largest peace time catering operation in the world.
- 1.2 million meals will be served to athletes, comprising 1300 different dishes.
- Over 800 spectator concessions featuring more than 150 different dishes will showcase the diversity and quality of British food
- All food sourced to high environmental, ethical and animal welfare standards
- Focus on affordability – food and drinks for a family of four for under £40
Over 14 million meals will be served during the Games, across 40 locations – the largest peace time catering operation in the world. 833 spectator concessions featuring more than 150 different types of dishes will showcase the great diversity and quality of British food at affordable prices.
The food will fit into two main themes. British food will reflect the multicultural mix of flavours and foods enjoyed across the UK, including everything from Italian dishes to Indian curries, seafood to salad and wraps as well as classic favourites like fish and chips and pie and mash.
The heritage and diversity of British regional products and recipes will be celebrated, for example lamb from Wales, charcuterie from Perthshire and sourdough bread from Tower Hamlets made in a traditional brick oven lined with peat from the Thames.
With 195 nations represented in the 6 host boroughs, London is a global city and there will be international food from every continent – from authentic Asian dishes to African Brai barbecues, Caribbean flavours to tasty Mediterranean dishes and a range of street foods from around the world.
As well as the millions of ticket holders and spectators, LOCOG is also responsible for feeding more than 15,000 athletes across both the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
The primary concern of the 23,900 athletes and team officials is to make sure they perform to their peak on competition days. Their ability to do this depends in no small part on the provision of familiar and nutritionally balanced food and drink, which will be available at exactly the right time of day or night.
1.2 million meals will be served to athletes, comprising 1300 different types of dishes. On the busiest day of the Games, over 65,000 meals will be served to athletes.
The main dining room seats over 5000 athletes and can fit the equivalent of 880 double decker buses. The room consists of four zones including British, European, Mediterranean, African and Caribbean dishes and caters for special diets such as Halal, Kosher, low salt and allergens.
In line with London 2012’s sustainability commitments, all fruit, vegetables and cereals are Red Tractor accredited, British and seasonal where available.
All dairy, beef, lamb, pork and poultry is also Red Tractor accredited as a minimum. All fish, with the sole exception of squid, is sustainable including the complete exclusion of species and stocks identified by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) as ‘fish to avoid’ and all wild-caught fish meeting the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
In addition, bananas, tea, coffee, sugar and white and rose wine are Fairtrade or ethically sourced and traditional cheeses are British. Eggs are British Lion mark free range and all chocolate sold is Fairtrade or ethically sourced.
Another integral part to London 2012’s sustainability commitments is the ambitious aim to become the first ever Zero Waste Games. LOCOG has partnered with the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to improve packaging and recycling. During the Games, event waste from public areas will be channelled into three waste streams (recycling; food and compostable packaging; non-recyclables) depicted by colour-coded icons for the bins and packaging.
The catering industry has been quick to adopt the London 2012 Food Vision, helping to create a stronger, more sustainable catering and hospitality industry that will be a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Organisations who have adopted these standards include the National Trust, London Zoo, 15 London universities, the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London and a wide range of restaurants and caterers, serving well over 100 million meals a year.
London 2012 commercial partners Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Cadbury Nature Valley and Heineken will also be supplying food and drink and will provide the only branded products on sale. McDonald’s will operate at four Olympic venue restaurants: one in the Athletes’ Village, another for the media in the Main Press Centre and two in the Olympic Park for spectators. All soft drinks and mineral water will be provided by Coca-Cola, including Innocent smoothies and juices, and 75% of the drinks Coca-Cola expect to sell at the Games will be water, juice or sugar-free. In addition free drinking water will be provided at all venues.
LOCOG Chief Executive, Paul Deighton said: ‘We want everyone who attends the Games this summer to have a fantastic experience and central to this is the food and drink that’s available.
We have gone to great lengths to find top quality, tasty food that celebrates the best of Britain. We believe that our prices are more than comparable to those found at other major sporting events which because of their temporary nature are often more expensive than the high street.
We are proud that the catering and industry has been quick to adopt the standards of our Food Vision, leaving a stronger and sustainable industry as a legacy of the Games.’

RFU Championship final: London Welsh 29-20 Cornish Pirates - BBC News
London Welsh sealed the Championship title and a chance of securing a Premiership place after beating Cornish Pirates 66-41 over two legs.
Welsh are now expected to take legal action over the Rugby Football Union's ruling that they are not eligible for promotion to the top flight.
Matt Evans went over for Pirates but Alex Davies' fifth penalty put Welsh ahead before Hudson Tonga'uiha's try.
Ryan Storer reduced the deficit but Jack Moates rounded off Welsh's win.
An RFU report said the Exiles had not achieved the minimum standards criteria to go up but the Richmond-based side are expeted to explore "all possible avenues" to gain promotion after seeing off Pirates in the final.
Having proposed to play their matches next season at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium, where the second leg of the final was played, an RFU statement said that not having primacy of tenure at their chosen ground was one of "various failures" in Welsh's promotion bid.
Three Premiership sides share grounds with football clubs; London Irish with Reading, London Wasps with Wycombe and Saracens with Watford, while Sale will share with Super League side Salford City Reds next season.
On Wednesday club president John Dawes said chairman Bleddyn Phillips would take the "ultimate" action to ensure Welsh do go up .
Having won at Pirates 37-21 last week , Welsh fought back from a seven-point deficit which threatened their first-leg advantage, to secure the Championship title having finished the regular season in fourth place.
Aaron Penberthy's drop goal had put Pirates ahead, Alex Davies then levelled for Welsh before Rob Cook's penalty and a second from Davies made it 6-6.
Evans gave Pirates a clear lead with the opening try of the match, picking up on a loose ball after Cook's punt forward bounced into open space deep in the Exiles' half.
Cook then added the extras before Davies failed with a penalty attempt on the stroke of half-time.
The Exiles fly-half was successful with his next two attempts with the boot after the break, closing the gap to one point and putting the hosts nine points ahead on aggregate.
Davies added a fifth penalty before Tonga'uiha, who had scored in the first leg, broke through the Pirates defence to touch down and Davies then added his first of two conversions.
Pirates responded with a consolation try as replacement prop Ryan Storer forced his way over after a scramble on the line before Cook added the extras.
But Welsh were not yet done as a fine move saw Ed Jackson feed the ball to Jack Moates, who crossed over to add the gloss to their victory.

As huge student protests continued to rage in Quebec, over 100 people demonstrated in solidarity outside Canadian government buildings in London last night (Wednesday).
The solidarity event, organised by Defend the Right to Protest (DTRTP), began at Canada House in Trafalgar Square with a noisy demonstration. It then wove its way through central London to the Quebec Government Office off Regents Street and the Canadian Embassy in Grosvenor Square.
Over 300,000 students in Quebec have been on strike for three months now against increases in tuition fees. The Quebec authorities have responded with draconian restrictions on the right to protest.
Rachel Harger, a DTRTP activist, told Socialist Worker that students who had protested against tuition fees in Britain understood the experiences of police intimidation and violence.
“People wanted to show support for the thousands arrested on the Quebec protests and those who have suffered injuries from the police,” she said. “Students in Britain received solidarity from around the world when we took to the streets. So it comes naturally for students here to do the same.”

Tesco eyes further F&F fashion stores - Marketing Week
Tesco could open further standalone F&F pop-up stores in the UK if the London trial launched this week is a success, as part of its overarching efforts to boost non-food sales.
The supermarket will assess the enthusiasm for the pop-up shop that launched in London this week to raise awareness of the F&F range to London shoppers and encourage Londoners to use its online clothing site.
Speaking to Marketing Week at the launch of the F&F pop-up shop in Covent Garden Emily Shamma, Tesco Clothing online director, says: “We never say never and things like this [pop-up] show that we’re testing what we can do with the brand. It wouldn’t be in the next couple of months but this is a trial and it helps us understand what we can do, and what customers think of product in different environments.”
“We’ve always been very proud of F&F as a brand but we’re recognising that we can do more with that. It’s a very international brand that’s successful in Europe and Asia so we want to harness our ability to stand as a global fashion brand.”
The supermarket currently has F&F stores in Poland. Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia.
Shamma adds that the pop-up, which only allows shoppers to buy products via iPads connected to its online platform or via smartphones and QR codes, shows how important online is to Tesco for future growth.
“We’ve realised we’re only just scratching the surface of what [online] can do for us. We’re trying to build awareness of the fact that we have a really great online platform across all our businesses including food, clothing and non-food,” she says.
The F&F pop-up also signals Tesco’s openness to testing “brave” new concepts as part of CEO Philip Clarke’s strategy to improve its UK business and make it more relevant for customers.
Shamma says: “You could spend weeks and months worrying whether it’s the right thing to do, but actually what you’ve got to do is go out, trial it, get customer feedback then you’ve got to decide that its not right for you now, or that if you tweak it you could do more with it, or its fantastic and you can roll it out further.
“That’s what trials are about. You’ve got to trial, you’ve got to be brave and do new things then customers will tell you whether they’re working or not.”
